Half-Life 3 trademarked

Valve remembers the number 3, for once.

ArsTechnica has discovered a European trademark for Half-Life 3. A proper follow-up to the Half-Life series has been long-awaited by fans, but a voice actor on the series most recently claimed it was no longer in development.

Trademarks aren't necessarily indicative of products that are coming out. They could simply be protecting the name. Internet sleuth Superannuation also points out that Valve actually never trademarked "Half-Life 2," a game that clearly exists. The highly-secretive company could simply be "trolling" fans, a follow-up tweet posits.

Sadly, that wouldn't surprise us much either.

Not in development currently =/= no longer in development.

That's because Valve digitally can replicate all the character voices based on a database so they don't need voice actors. Ever.

haha the idle thumbs haven't been very interesting but this one bit was awesome, it reminded me of the idle thumbs glory days.

I'm talking like they've George Lucas'd the podcast but I think that it's just me that got a bit bored of gaming podcasts and news in general.

But this controller/half-life thing was fucking great!

Toyota renewed the Supra trademark in 2010, after having let it lapse in 2006. There hasn't been a new Supra yet... but there's the Toyota-BMW collaboration under way to build a sports car, allegedly on the 6-series platform, maybe with an inline 6 hybrid powertrain...

Companies renew trademarks to keep their options open. I don't imagine we'll hear anything announced for the next 2 to 4 years, but this being a patent office filing, Valve had to know it wouldn't escape public scrutiny.

Yeah, Valve should have trademarked this three milliseconds after Half-Life had gone gold. Might as well cover more than one sequel to Half-Life while you're at it.

They don't appear to have a USPTO trademark registered (or at least I couldn't find one). The do have a US trademark for DOTA3 though.

probably not even necessary move to do this, since any other company making a "Half-Life 3" would cause confusion and would be an easy win in federal court for Valve

HL3 will be the "killer app" for SteamOS, SteamBox, etc.
