Classic adventure game Day of the Tentacle was being remade a la the Monkey Island special editions. Developed by LucasArts Singapore, the remastered game would have been pseudo-3D, with remade background art and new cut-scenes.

The project was never officially greenlit, but it was apparently almost finished, with one source claiming it was "80% done."

In spite of how close to completion the remake was, a LucasArts exec said that there was "no interest" in continuing to make "legacy" games. "For many involved this was a dream project," a source told Kotaku in an expose about the company's downfall. "But sadly, like many, many LucasArts games in development, it never saw the light of day."

I'd love somebody to make a chart showing exactly when it was LucasArts was taken over by fools.

They went downhill around the same time Star Wars Episode 1 came out and all they were allowed to make were Star Wars games.

I kind of assumed something like this happened. They were really into rereleasing their older games for a while and then as soon as they changed leadership again, they completely stopped.

It sort of sounds like they deserved to get shut down.

yea whatever guys, the last 20% of a project is always 90% of the work

Exactly. It's like those failed Battlefront devs saying the thing was next-to-finished. Yeah right.

Exactly. A good chunk of canceled games are '80% done' and over a year away from a realistic release date.

Luckily, the original version is eminently playable even today. It's only a year or two since my last playthrough and, low res be damned, it's still brilliant.

Excellent point. Good thing we have piracy to safeguard our cultural heritage. (I wish that was a joke. In the digital age we really do need a law stating that if you choose not to sell it for x number of years, it's public domain.)

Those were the main ones. Maniac Mansion and Grim Fandango are the other two that come to mind.

Wait this isn't the same thing as the new episodes that were rumored to possible be in development like the Tales of Monkey Island games that Tell Tale made, right? Is there still a chance of that happening?
