Xbox One not designed for vertical orientation

Microsoft's Albert Panello says that the Xbox One isn't meant to stand vertically like the Xbox 360, and that cautioned: "do it at your own risk."

Come November 22, you might be planning to slide your Xbox 360 out of its little nook and your shiny new Xbox One in. But if that space is vertically oriented, think again. Microsoft says the new console wasn't built to stand up.

"We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk," senior director of product management Albert Panello told GameSpot. You probably could have guessed that much, considering all of the official images we've seen of the system have it laying on its belly.

Panello was sure to note that it wouldn't create a cooling problem for the console, but the disc drive could be a problem. "Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both." He also pointed out that, at least according to their own research, 80% of people have their Xbox 360 consoles oriented horizontally. So most people shouldn't be too put out by the requirement.

I could handle slower performance, higher price, forced Kinect, and inferior launch titles, but no vertical orientation? That's the last straw!

Even though the vertical users are only 20%, I still find it strange that Microsoft wouldn't have designed the machine to do vertical. Twenty percent still seems like a materially significant number of users.

If you don't use discs, it doesn't seem like it will be a problem. Maybe that's the idea?

The disc excuse sounds like bullshit. The first two PS3 models had slot-loading drives, as does PS4. All of them do vertical just fine.

I have never seen anyone keep their xbox console horizontal. Especially the new models which are kinda designed to be stand straight up.

ditto. i don't understand how they'd even fit in a tv stand or entertainment unit standing up. are people leaving them on the top shelf next to their small TVs? leaving them on the floor (so that someone clumsy can walk by and knock it over destroying the game in the disc tray?)?

Consoles were all horizontal before the last generation where it was merely an option than a requirement. The disk trays of them all were still ideally used horizontally. Even when we had cartridge based systems they all still sat horizontal. I'm sure there are a probably exceptions but horizontal has always been the norm beyond consoles (VCRs, DVD players, receivers, record players, cable boxes, etx) since a big benefit is you can also stack them.

According to Microsoft research circa 2012, over 90% of 360 usershad a broadband connection, so they said, "We're doing always-on for the XBox One. Get used to it. This is the alwsys-on world we live in... oh wait, we're getting huge negative feedback, and out biggest competitor made a mockery of us with their used game policy, and humiliated us at E3! RUN AWAY!!"

I've seen press photos of a vertical PS4, so perhaps Mark Cerny can speak up. I think it's funny that they use the slot-loading Blu-Ray drive as an excuse, when numerous optical drive manufacturers have supported vertically oriented slot-loading DVD drives for over a decade. Hell, wasn't the original PS3 supported in vertical?

IMO, the Xbox 360 wasn't really designed to stand vertically either. Sure, it had rubber feet, but if you so much as bumped a vertical 360 while a disc was spinning you were liable to ruin the disc.

For me, once I had the cable box and PS3, I ran out of space for horizontal appliances that were not rack-mountable. Tge gaming PC tower case is floor-standing. The 360... er, Bayonetta arcade machine, is standing vertically. I just don't have any more table or shelf space, and most horizontal devices demand top air cooling, so you can't stack them anymore.

stacked vertically they're just more annoying to put discs in and more likely to destroy them or get knocked over and destroy itself

It's up to the consumer to put it where it won't get knocked over, and up to the drive manufacturer to ensure the spindle clamps down securely under normal use.

There's not much hope for me getting more entertainment room space until I get enough to buy a house, so I have no sympathy for designers who assume I have infinite non-stackable horizontal space for entertainment devices. They need to stop thinking that every home is is a gigantic suburban McMansion in Bellevue.

i think you're extrapolating a lot of intent that just isn't there. the current consoles are not appreciably larger than existing ones, and they really only require a tiny footprint. they don't assume infinite space; they just assume space for their product and maybe a receiver or something.

I have my PC rigged upside down in a perpetually swinging hammock and it gets fucked up all the time. I can't believe hardware manufacturers are so insensitive. I should be able to set it up however I want and it should just work. Don't they know my floor is too covered in Doritos bags to accommodate a full tower? Get out of your bubble jerks.

So... this is a small problem for me. Nothing I can't find a workaround for... I tuck my systems behind my HDTV on an angle so that they're "invisible". I don't have an entertainment unit that has enough room for all of my gadgets (I know, I know... "boo hop". I realize how petty this can sound). I also like having my consoles behind the HDTV on the TV entertainment stand because there's WAY more breathing room back there... less chance of overheating. The items I have in my entertainment cabinet are a Pioneer A/V receiver, a center channel, and a TIVO. I have no room for my Wii U, XBOX 360, or PS3. Those three are tucked and angled behind the TV. I'm not sure how, where I'd be able to put my XBOX One.... I guess I'll need to get creative with it come November. :-)
