State of Decay ambles onto Steam Early Access

Undead Labs needs a little help with State of Decay's PC version, so they're looking for player feedback from a Steam Early Access release.

State of Decay, in its current state, isn't ready for a full PC release. Developer Undead Labs is still working on that and are looking for player feedback to help them along. After teasing this route a few months ago, the studio has released its undead survival game through Steam Early Access.

The PC version of State of Decay, in its current state, is identical to the original Xbox 360 version. That means no mouse and keyboard support, as of yet. However, Undead Labs is working to optimize the final version for PC.

"We'd never release a PC game without a fully mature mouse and keyboard interface," Undead Labs founder Jeff Strain tells Polygon, "unless we were able to do it with something like Early Access, where everybody who's coming in understand why we're doing that and understands that this means that we have a commitment to listening to what you say, and actively altering the course of development while we work toward the end goal, based on what you say."

State of Decay is available now on Steam for $19.99.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

yay. Though sad it needs to be on early access, really disliking the idea around that stuff.

most of the feedback will look like this:

"so when are we getting mouse and keyboard support?"

"is there support for mouse and keyboard?"

"why cant I use my mouse + keyboard?"

      "KEYBOARD DO YOU SPEAK IT?"

The game actually does support basic mouse and keyboard but the bindings cannot be changed yet. That and the onscreen prompts are still X-Box buttons.

This is the one that's like DayZ single player permadeath meets base builder?

It is a really fun game on XBLA. Very nice combat system and pretty brutal animations. The problem I ended up having is that once you realize there are only about 10 main story missions, and all those hours and hours of searching houses and getting geared up doesn't really account for much in the end.

The sandbox mode is what interests me, and that is still not yet out. Moving away from storyline and going into pure survival sounds far more exciting.
