Yasumi Matsuno, creator of well-regarded Square RPGs Final Fantasy Tactics and Vagrant Story, has announced his next game. Partnering with mobile game publisher Playdek, Matsuno will be helming a new franchise called 'Unsung Story.'

The first game of the series will be a mobile take on tabletop card games. French board game designer Christophe Boelinger will be designing the mechanics, while Matsuno will primarily be responsible for the story and world-building. The already-planned sequel Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians will hew much more closely to Matsuno's prior work, as a Tactics-like strategy game. The first game is aiming for a 2014 release, and the second has no date announced. Both will be for mobile devices.

Similar to FFT, the story is inspired by European history. This time, it's set in a medieval fantasy world called Rasfalia with generous helpings of Western European conflict in the fifth century. Naturally, though, it adds magical creatures and wizards to the mix as well.

"I'm pleased to be creating this amazing world and rich story exclusively for Playdek," said Matsuno, in the announcement. "It's exciting to develop my vision with the leading company of the genre. I look forward to bringing this new world to life and reaching a new audience of avid gamers."

Glad to see him making more stuff.

I just wish he could work with a bigger team and make more console/PC titles.

Resemblance to FFT the really good, top 5 game of all time one or resemblance to FFT:AX the terrible, for small children game?

Neither A1 or A2 are "for small children". The stories might be less dark and intense, but the gameplay is still great and A2 is probably the best-playing game in the series.

The gameplay was a damn sight better in FFTA. But the gameplay wasn't what attracted me to that world so I was pretty disappointed with the changes in theme and tone.

And I confess that I did not finish the game because of it. Could've gotten better for all I know. *shrug*

Yeah, I couldn't finish FFTA because I was not invested at all in the characters or story.

"a mobile take on tabletop card games."

      This is a joke, right...?

Well it IS Playdek, so it's hardly surprising.
Here's hoping it's more Ascension and less PA: Gamers vs Evil.
