Yamauchi was responsible for Nintendo's transformation from card game manufacturer to video game giant. He retired in 2002 and passed along his responsibilities to Satoru Iwata, who runs the business today. Although he stepped down from his position following the launch of Gamecube, he has remained a vital part of the company, remaining one of Nintendo's largest shareholders.
A Nintendo spokesperson confirmed the news to the BBC and says they are mourning the "loss of the former Nintendo president Mr Hiroshi Yamauchi."

Sad week for Japabese industry in general. Eiji Toyoda passed away on the 17th: http://japanesenostalgiccar.com/2013/09/17/news-eiji-toyoda-1913-2013/
On a trip to America in 1950, Eiji visited Ford’s River Rouge plant, the largest factory in the world then. It cranked out 7,000 cars a day, more than double the total number of Toyota cars that had, up to that time, ever been built. Despite its output, however, Eiji also saw piles of wasted parts and numerous inefficiencies, and knew its assembly lines could be improved on. -
