Former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi has passed away. He was 85 years old.

Yamauchi was responsible for Nintendo's transformation from card game manufacturer to video game giant. He retired in 2002 and passed along his responsibilities to Satoru Iwata, who runs the business today. Although he stepped down from his position following the launch of Gamecube, he has remained a vital part of the company, remaining one of Nintendo's largest shareholders.

A Nintendo spokesperson confirmed the news to the BBC and says they are mourning the "loss of the former Nintendo president Mr Hiroshi Yamauchi."
