"Our plan is to sell 5 million PS4s by the end of 2013," Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House said during his Tokyo Game Show keynote. (Update: Sony's Shuhei Yoshida clarified that this refers to fiscal 2013, which ends in March 2014.) That would greatly outpace sales of PS3, which managed to sell 3.5 million units in a similar timeframe.

Sony announced one million pre-orders for PS4 one month ago. And although pre-order inventory is largely sold out, Sony has promised it has intentionally held back systems to ensure availability at retail.

PS4 will be available in the US on November 15th, with the console also available before year's end in Europe, Central & South America, and many Asian countries. Japan will also get PS4 in February, before Sony's March deadline. With such a massive launch planned, Sony seems likely to make that ambitious goal.
