Ubisoft and RedLynx are taking Trials into the mobile realm with Trials Frontier, releasing it as a free-to-play game. Developer RedLynx's Tero Virtala explains the idea behind this decision, saying that he hopes the low barrier of entry will entice more players to give Frontier a trial run.

"We want a lot of players to play this game, and people are more likely to give Trials a try if it doesn't cost them to test it out," Virtala told Eurogamer. "More players means more competition on the leaderboards, more players able to participate in local and live events, to create and share user-generated content."

According to a Digital Spy post, Trials Frontier will utilize a fuel system to initially limit sessions, though players can purchase more fuel with in-game currency or actual money, with designer Justin Swan assuring players that everything in the game can be purchased with the former.

Trials Frontier was one of two Trials games revealed at E3, with Trials Fusion announced for PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Xbox 360. Frontier is set to arrive on iOS and Android before the end of 2013.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
