Xbox One director explains 'overstated' spec differences with PS4

Microsoft director of product planning Albert Penello says the differences in technical specs between Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are "overstated," and provided some details on why.

There's a largely-held belief that PlayStation 4 is more powerful than Xbox One, largely due to a beefier GPU and faster RAM. However, Microsoft director of product planning Albert Penello recently addressed the subject head-on, saying there is "misinformation about our performance."

Calling the differences between the two consoles "overstated," Penello took to NeoGAF (via MCV) to explain his message in more detail.

First, he acknowledges that PS4's GPU offers 50% more compute units than Xbox One's. However, he reiterates what we already pointed out: "Multi-core processors have inherent inefficiency with more CU's, so it's simply incorrect to say 50% more GPU." PS4 may have the edge, but not by such a massive gulf.

Secondly, Penello contends that PS4 does not have the memory advantage, as Sony has been claiming. "We have more memory bandwidth. 176gb/sec is peak on paper for GDDR5 (Memory used in PS4). Our peak on paper is 272gb/sec." Earlier reports confirmed Xbox One's improved potential memory bandwidth, however Digital Foundry pointed out that "theoretical peak performance is one thing, but in real-life scenarios it's believed that 133GB/s throughput has been achieved."

Finally, Penello reminds gamers that the company recently bumped up the clock speed of both the GPU and CPU.

"Hopefully with some of those more specific points people will understand where we have reduced bottlenecks in the system," Penello concluded. "The people designing our system are some of the smartest graphics engineers around--they understand how to architect and balance a system for graphics performance."
