Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls expansion 'definitely' coming to consoles

The console version of Diablo 3 won't end with the core game, as the Reaper of Souls expansion is also said to be in development.

Diablo 3 arrives on Xbox 360 and PS3 this week. And like its PC counterpart, the console version will also evolve with new content. The upcoming Reaper of Souls expansion is coming to consoles, although Blizzard is trying to figure out how.

Speaking to AusGamers, Blizzard's Matthew Burger says that Reaper of Souls will get the console treatment, but it will take time. "Obviously we wanna bring this expansion to console, we don't exactly know how we're going to do it yet," he said.

Instead of simply porting the expansion, the console version will require tweaks. "We're going to treat the expansion in the same way we treated Diablo 3 when we moved it onto console, which means that we have to make sure that it is adapted to the console ecosystem in a way that is going to play the best way possible. So that's going to require some changes; some additions, some subtractions, just like we did with the original game, [but] it will definitely come to console."

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

And this is a major reason why Diablo 3 hardcore is such a pita. The whole variant community was in for a rude surprise. In D3, it is not possible to overcome weaker gear through sheer player ability. D3 is full of unavoidable damage at every turn, monster attacks that simply cannot be dodged and have to be tanked through

god knows the Diablo franchise is known for its highly skill based gameplay...

It's primarily been a digital pinata and slot machine for quite awhile.

You know, most people that have played the game are aware that you need a brain to finish it too. I don't think anyone feels like they have to motivate that to you :)

Diablo 2 unavoidable insta-kills were typically limited to skeleton fetishes. In Diablo 3 it's whichever way the wind blows that day. Especially with the super-uniques.

HC progression in Diablo 3 is done via over-gearing.
HC progression in Diablo 2 is done via extreme caution.

The trouble was the combination. Half of the MANY Static Fields coming off per hit were invisible.
Can't dodge what you can't see.

Static Field is a skill that removes a percentage of your hp, not lighting bolts.

Oh, yeah, I was thinking Charged Bolts. The little patches of electricity that come off of Lightning Enchanted creatures and move somewhat randomly away.

D3 seemed way more player skill oriented than the previous two. Stuff had fight mechanics.

You mean the WoW-like fight mechanics of ex. Mephisto? Yeah, those you have to be really clever to survive. :)

Eh. I dont agree with most of the character based complaints... really it just comes down to itemization, they screwed that up about as badly as they possibly could....

I kinda skimmed this, but I agree with the basic point. A phenomenally uninteresting end game, which is... kind of saying a lot given that the end game of Diablo 2 was basically broken and still somehow more engaging.

I think the point is that the fun can actually be had WHILE playing. People who think there's some sort of mystical amazing ending that is uber-fun and entirely different from everything else you'd been doing 90% of the time up to that point, are bound to be entirely disappointed.

I had fun while playing. For a little while. A game needs more than just fun arcade gameplay to have any kind of longevity.

gonna be hard to read it when it starts with this

I've had the Diablo 3 shortcut sitting on my desktop for over a year now without once clicking on it to launch the game.

In prior Diablo games, it was possible to complete all three difficulties with severely underleveled and underitemized characters, simply through incredible player skill level and deep knowledge of game mechanics. This was pretty much the founding principle behind Realms Beyond as a website, as the variant group of players that made up Realms Beyond Diablo found ways to beat the game with no gear (Naked Mages) or even cursed gear that LOWERED your stats (Beyond Naked Mages). This easily carried over to Diablo 2, with crippled variant characters poking around with all sorts of crazy stuff and still managing to complete the three dot run. Everyone expected the same kind of gameplay to carry over to D3 as well.

haha. this would be interesting to watch.
