Battlefield 4 'Second Assault' DLC revives classic maps with added destructibility

Battlefield 4 executive producer Patrick Bach explained a little more about the changes coming to the Battlefield 3 maps in the "Second Assault" pack, saying they'll have "Levolution concepts and a more on top of it."

39

One of the first expansions for Battlefield 4 is "Second Assault." The pack takes four "fan-favorite" maps from Battlefield 3 and remixes them to support key features from Battlefield 4. Namely, they have an added focus on "Levolution"--DICE's name for dynamic maps that have things blow up in them.

"[Second Assault] is a fan-favorite collection with Battlefield 4 Levolution concepts and more on top of it," Bach told Videogamer. "All the data from [the maps] has changed. As much as possible they will feel the same: it's from the same world, but with Battlefield 4 graphical enhancements and Levolution concepts etc, etc. So there's a twist to all of them. A bigger or smaller twist."

"Levolution" made its debut with players taking down a skyscraper in the Shanghai map. More recently, the concept was demoed by having a boat crash into an island.

There simply isn't enough distance between this game and BF3 to bring those maps back. I don't want to play any of those maps again, especially not Metro. Doesn't matter how much they gussy them up.

I see it as waste of an expansion and the biggest mistake they're making for BF4, but I'm sure most people are probably hard for it. Give me something new, or go back further for a classic revival pack :(

It's not, really. Near as I can tell, Titanfall is more like COD with mechs. 2142 fans want Battlefield with mechs, which incidentally is what 2142 was (well, among other things).

Yeah, I think maybe it's time to bring back the WW2 shooter. People say it's been done to death but after all these years of "modern warfare" it might actually feel refreshing when done with all the new technology.

And obviously Battlefield 1943 doesn't count as a true successor to 1942. Not only did it not come to PC, but it had what, three maps? None of which were new? Not a full fledged Battlefield game.

Those were just 4 of the middle eastern maps. Never touched the Chinese ones from BF2, would have made sense to remake some of those as the Chinese army is returning in BF4. But anything would be better than BF3 maps again.

And it's been played it to death. Extremely tired of it as it was only one of 4 decent 64 player conquest maps in that game to begin with, give it some space and bring it back for the next game maybe. BF4 is too soon and way too similar.

FuShe is awesome, one of the best, for sure. Bf4 surely won't have anything nearly as diverse, detailed, and large. All the DICE-hype about Bf3 and Bf4 maps being large is bs. None of them can compare to Bf2's largest.

I think Levolution is more than just the massive scripted events that you see with the boat crashing or the skyscraper falling. It's also all of the other affects as well, such as the awesome looking changing weather affects, the car alarms and metal detectors that go off, the shooting out of light switches, more destructibility in general, such as taking out support columns in buildings. I am pretty excited about all of that.

It's exactly this, but marketing will focus on the large-scale events like the aforementioned battleship crash or skyscraper collapse. Really, levolution is trying to evolve the dynamics of the level beyond just destruction. I think that it's a big jump simply because there's more unpredictability and greater opportunity for the savvy player to do well. (Trapping guys, using car alarms and detectors as distractions, etc.)

I'm not to keen on the main game shipping with 10 maps while the DLC will add 20 after seeing that what happened to BF3. Wish it could be the other way around.

20 maps at launch and two expansions that add 5 more each, get it all out while the game is still semi-fresh and popular. Or a more reasonable balance of 15 in the game and 15 in three expansions. Don't drag it out over a year and change adding four maps between huge breaks. After the second DLC pack for BF3, the shackbattles had died entirely because most people were done with the game by then. Creating and balancing maps isn't easy, I know, but they've had two years since BF3 and we're only getting 10 up front while they're already promoting the rest. I guess I have to be content that they didn't decide to go with less than BF3's 9 shipping maps, I was expecting 7 or 8 this time with all the focus they were giving to the single player earlier in the year.

Still think they should give one map in each pack for free so people can get a taste before buying, or better yet, call it a limited time open beta and actually try to improve them before putting them out for real. But really, they should give the community a map editor and fuck off with the DLC maps entirely.

Yes, I know they'll never do that and it's unrealistic to expect that, I just can't help but feel that Battlefield could be doing more than be the cash grab for EA it has become like everything else.

As a long time fan of the series and someone who appreciated the community made mods and maps in BF1942 - BF2 so much, it sucks it turned out this way. Not only sucks, but fucking sucks hard turbo dick. They could try to work both angles like Valve does with TF2 and get their money while also appeasing the community and rewarding creators, but I don't think EA are type to ever pull something like that off. They can only be successful in aping Activision's already established Call of Duty business model so that's what they'll go on doing.

I personally miss the days when DICE would add a new map in each major BF42 update and allow custom maps, in addition to doing the retail expansions. Eventually they started releasing official tools for their games as well.

DICE made some (I presume bullshit) statement about Frosbite 2 being too complex for modders. I see tons of great looking mods being made for CryEngine 3, so unless Frosbite's tools are total crap, then I don't see why mods for Battlefield 4 are impossible. I wouldn't expect the same number of mods as Battlefield 1942 or 2, but even a few can help build a healthy online community.

I mean, a big complaint from a lot of rabble rousers was that a lot of the maps felt constricted and very "un battlefield esque."

The only ones I'd want coming over from BF3 would be Caspian Border and Operation Firestorm. Damavand Peak on conquest sucked because the tunnel became a stupid death funnel. Noshahr Canals felt a bit too disjointed for my liking. I'll admit I liked Seine Crossing so I suppose if Leveloution (UGH) really let you fuck with the maps structure it could be interesting and actually alleviate some of the issues with that map.
