Final Fantasy 14 digital sales suspended to ease server load

Square Enix has temporarily suspended sales of Final Fantasy 14, in order to ease the server capacity problems that have prevented users from getting into the game.

Following server troubles, Square Enix has decided to temporarily suspend new digital sales of Final Fantasy 14. Citing an "overwhelmingly positive response," the company conceded that the number of users has made for "extremely long wait times," necessitating the move.

This move isn't entirely uncommon for MMOs. Guild Wars 2 made the same move last year to ease "high player concurrency."

"As a temporary measure, we will halt sales of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn’s digital download products so we can accommodate all of those wishing to play," a Facebook post (via IGN) reads. "We are working to expand our server capacity in the coming days. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this causes."

Before anyone starts yelling bloody murder, GW2 did just this for a bit. Its a good move to help them out in a real shitty situation.

I havent been able to get in, and its pissing me off (esp since we're burning our 1st month at this point right?) but it is what it is. I just want them to fix it asap. (and put the god damn QUEUE BACK IN)

No, they've added 4 days to when they will start collecting service fees from everyone so far. They may add more in the future depending on when they can get the issues resolved.

Good to hear. IF we get into paid time and i still cant get on (or sit comfortably in a queue) i will shine my pitchfork and get it ready.

Either way, the fact that its still a good game that people WANT TO PLAY comforts me in the face of all this bullshit.

i'm having a lot of fun with it. One of the better MMO experiences i've had lately. It also helps that I don't have all my characters up to 50 and I can switch between a few classes though :)

Good companies do this (Blizzard ended up adding about a free month collectively to early WoW subscribers.) Good on Square.

exactly, without all these people the login issues probably would not exist. For example, check out one of the lower pop servers. You can log in with no problems just about every time you try, even during peak.

i'm not mad. i'll check once a day and if i can't get in then i'll go play something else. sooner or later it'll be fine.

I just made a second character on a Japanese server and am playing that one focused on getting to 50, rather than checking out everything, which is what I'm doing on my main.

Not being sarcastic here: This is what I said about SimCity.

FF XIV seems an amazing story in how to save face with an MMO. They've taken something that was almost the ultimate in awful and turned it around to an amazing experience. Go Square.

They've also been in the red lately as a company. I'd be surprised if that wasn't in part due to the amount of resources they've had to dedicate to turn FF14 around. Hopefully for them all these people at launch/re-launch stick around.

I don't know if I've just stuck my head in the sand regarding this game, but what about it is new at all? Or is it just the next iteration of Final Fantasy, while online and stuff?

Like, anyone have a quick highlights list of why to play?

FFXI is a solid MMO released back in 2002. Still has some of the better group mechanics even today IMHO.

Back in 2010 they release the successor FFXIV and pull a Turbine by successfully alienating their entire FFXI userbase.

Square, unlike Turbine, goes oh shit! and the game goes back into full production.

2013 they essentially re-release FFXIV and now it's a much more proper sequel to FFXI.

I'm confused why they don't have a working queue going. Sometimes it queues, but typically it just gives you an error. :<
