Halo: Spartan Assault--the first official Halo game on PC in eons--shipped without any support for Xbox 360 controllers. It was an especially odd decision, given that the game was a twin-stick shooter. That glaring oversight is being addressed in a new title update coming August 29th.

Dubbed "Operation Hydra," the free update not only adds support for wired Xbox 360 controllers, but it also adds five new missions to the Windows 8 game.

"Rejoin Spartan Sarah Palmer as you intercept a haunting alien signal after the destruction of planet Draetheus V, and follow the signal to the core of the planet's moon where you'll discover its terrifying source. Fight with Palmer and embark on a series of new missions and new environments as you try to unravel a mystery that hits surprisingly close to home," Microsoft's official PR reads.

The update also does away with the pesky microtransactions of the original game. Now, you'll be able to buy power weapons with in-game XP, if you so wish.

If you're curious about this Halo spin-off game, but don't want to drop money on the Windows Store quite yet, a free demo will also be available on August 30th.

How this game does not support the Xbox 360 controller just blows my mind.

The game will still not even boot up on my rig it just does not even work :( I guess I don't meet the system requirements.

Freaking horrible, I never should of bought it what a joke.

This game probably got greenlit early in the Surface product cycle, as a stopgap between mainline Halo games, and as a part of an aggressive push to get some internal-developed games on the Windows RT marketplace. In that bubble, some of the thinking behind the decisions becomes clear.

You of all people should be able to run it. What is wrong with Microsoft, they can't do anything right, can't they?

well it's primarily a phone/tablet game and how many people attach a controller to one of those devices?

No excuse, I have a 360 controller on my windows tablet actually they all have usb ports(none RT).

Well since it's on the Windows store is it not supposed to be tested to shit and gone threw all the rigorous certifications?

The joke of it is MS busts Indie devs ballz and their own First party game is broken as shit and they can not even support their own basic Xbox 360 controller. Having Xbox 360 controller support is not a feature it should be mandatory.

It is mental, "A FREE patch that adds controller support" seriously WTF adding Xbox 360 control to your game is freaking easy I had it in my game in the first couple days and the K&M support as well and I am not a top shelf First Party Game shop, I am juts a punk in a flat doing his thing.

          No excuse it is sad.

Rage out, maybe one day they will fix it so I can actually try it :(

I thought it was for Windows 8 rather than just RT/Phone? Your statement would mean Windows 8 is primarily a phone/tablet OS.

The game shipped on phones and Win8/WinRT without controller support, what clearer sign is there that the product was designed for touch?

I don't know how you go from "the store has a touch first app" to "therefore the OS with that store is touch first." The store also has apps with little to no touch support, so now is it an OS for mouse/kb first?

We are talking about a game for Windows 8 which many people run on computers and hook up 360 controllers to. It's reasonable they would want to play a Halo twin-stick shooter with their controller.

Your reply was just funny when a lot of the criticism of Win 8 is that many of the additions are poor on a desktop/laptop without touch and you excuse it by saying it is primarily intended for touch. I don't see how they got the green light to release the game on Win8 without 360 controller support! It's crazy.

I've been playing it on a Surface. It's good, the touch controls are the best.
