Anyone who liked Soldier Of Fortune has probably heard of it by now, but Raven is working on a Gold edition of the game. This addon, which will enhance the multiplayer part of the game, will be a free download for current owners and will also sell in retail together with the original game. Kenn Hoekstra was kind enough to send two new screenshots of the pack. Here's what you can expect:

- 15-20 new multiplayer levels - new multiplayer character models - bot support - new team modes, such as Capture the Flag
It should be out by late August

  • Free download for current owners - you gotta respect that.

Frankly, more companies should adopt similar marketing strategies and reap the long-term rewards of supporting the original consumer when it comes to 'gold' or 'game of the year' additions. I like it.

As a matter of fact, companies should stop providing free upgrades to the retail consumer when there are no more official upgrades to the original product to include:

    1. Any core engine enhancements that are intended to correct known problems, security issues, or gameplay enhancements of the original code. I don't expect to get a whole new batch of 20+ levels to play for free, but I shouldn't have to buy the 'game of the year edition' to upgrade my multiplayer code to a more stable state or if new security protocols are made available.

    2. Add-on level samples. At least throw registered owners a few Scooby Snacks (tm), and kick down at least 2 levels found on add-on discs for free. I'm not asking for a free copy of the add-on disc, but a small sample to entice me to spend my money again, for an expansion to the same game. An example would be if I purchased Q1, I wouldn't expect support from Q2 to extend back to me, but support for Q1's expansion packs should be a given. And if the original game is republished as a 'game of the year' with previously-unreleased content that is intended to fit the context of the original game, such as more levels or new weapons, we as original product consumers should be given a complimentary taste of the new product that we helped become a 'game of the year' edition.

    Lost money? Customer investment!

    Thanks!
