Starbound is an upcoming extraterrestrial sandbox adventure that promises to strand players on a procedurally-generated foreign planet--and explore. It's coming to PC, Mac, Linux, and now, PS4.

Not only are the landscapes procedurally-generated, so are the creatures and weapons. Players will have the option to explore their strange surroundings, or build a castle or cabin settlement. The game can be played solo or with a friend.

"As developers, we've been inspired by all the games we grew up playing," lead writer Ashton Raze says on the PlayStation.Blog. "From isometric '80s classics to Castlevania, Zelda, Metroid. Celebrated platformers like Mario and Sonic, RPGs such as Elder Scrolls and Ultima, and iconic handheld games such as Pokemon. Starbound draws on numerous classic influences, while taking a thoroughly modern approach to crafting, narrative and world-building. It's an amalgamation of the games we loved as kids, and the games we love now, fully focused on providing the player with an engrossing, fun experience."

A release date for Starbound's PS4 version has not been given. Pre-orders for the PC, Mac, and Linux versions are available now.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
