Plants vs Zombies 2 going to the 'Far Future'

Today during the EA Gamescom briefing, PopCap announced plans for the first Plants vs Zombies 2 expansion: Far Future.

Plants vs Zombies 2 is about time, haven't you heard? So the next expansion, named "Far Future," takes the free-to-play game into the future. Crazy Dave's time machine will be exiting the past and dipping into more sci-fi tropes.

In a follow-up, a message from the official Twitter account said, "When we have updates to share about Far Future or other platforms, we'll indeed share them. The team is ALWAYS working hard on what's next!" That leaves any details to be given in the hopefully-not-far future.

EA also took the occasion to boast some impressive numbers for the sequel. After only five days on the market, PvZ2 has been downloaded more than 16 million times, and day one downloads almost doubled EA's previous mobile record. It also hit the #1 slot on the App Store in 137 countries. In total, players have clocked more than 25 million hours of playtime. More platforms are coming, but like the expansion, those details are still forthcoming.

"We are grateful and delighted with the incredible reception Plants vs. Zombies 2 has received from consumers around the globe," said franchise director Tony Leamer, in the announcement. "We certainly had high hopes for the game, but to see fans playing the game so quickly and in such huge numbers is truly amazing."
