America's Army: Proving Grounds will launch on August 29 on Steam, the US Army announced today. Proving Grounds focuses on smaller units, aiming to give a realistic look at tactical maneuvers used by soldiers in the field.

The official site lets you register your name for the game, and released a new trailer today as well (below). Of course, not wanting to step on diplomatic toes, it's set in the fictional "Republic of the Ostregals," which is too strange a name to possibly be confused with any actual country. The game itself consists of 6v6 Battledrill Exercises and 12v12 Forward Line Operation missions. The smaller battledrills are intended to prepare you for the larger-scale ops.

"We built America’s Army: Proving Grounds to appeal to novice as well as experienced America’s Army players," said project manager Marsha Berry. "For AA fans we are bringing back some of the much loved maps from AA2 and also introducing a new map style that's smaller and more focused, allowing players to be much more thoughtful and strategic in their gameplay. For new AA players, the intuitive style of gameplay will allow players to gain experience and confidence much easier. Our emphasis on teamwork will allow new players to succeed, and allow experienced players a new level of depth in how they wish to strategize with their clans and train for competition."
