Arma 3 campaign delayed to post-launch as DLC

Bohemai Interactive has announced that the campaign for Arma 3 will be added post-launch, in the form of three downloadable episodes.

The campaign for Arma 3 will be released post-launch as three free downloadable episodes. The first one is called Survive, and will be available about a month after release. The other two, Adapt and Win, are coming sometime afterwards.

The announcement acknowledges a troubled development, and suggests that this decision was made to get the core sandbox out to players and modders as soon as possible. Specific release details haven't been announced, but it's said to be releasing in Q3.

"This was not a decision we made lightly," said project lead Joris-Jan van't Land, in the announcement. "As game creators, we love developing and playing through campaigns so, to those awaiting ours, we say: sorry for the delay. After talking a lot about a focus on quality over the last year, it simply did not feel right to compromise now. Rather than pushing back the entire game, we launch this year with an awesome package--a splendid kick off for the Arma 3 experience."

A more detailed blog post gives more detail on the studio's work so far, and what went into this decision. It says that unexpected events (likely referring to its strange staff arrest in Greece) put a strain on development. Meanwhile, business considerations are keeping the studio from just delaying the full game altogether. Bohemia considers the the main release as a "platform," though, and hopes fans will be satisfied with the open world while they wait for the campaign.

Bummer. I haven't played a lot of their games, but I like what they do. I don't like to hear that they're struggling. Having picked up Arma 3 while in alpha, it's unfortunate that I'll now have to purchase the campaign separately. Hopefully it'll be reasonably priced.

I read the article and got the 3 parts and the first part coming 1 month after launch, but somehow missed the FREE part.

Just didn't expect to see it, probably (not a joke).

Whenever I hear about DLC my mind instantly jumps to corporate-profiteering mindset and I don't expect to see "free" anything.

I play that shit. In fact, playing the Arma2 campaign co-operatively (along with Operation Arrowhead) was some of the most fun I've ever had.

Anybody know if the new campaign in Arma3 will have co-op?

So they're going the Minecraft route. Push out an 'official' release of an unfinished project so they can start charging full price before everyone has already purchased it. Got to love the excuses.

It will be released as free updates, no extra charge will be added, assuming you either already bought the alpha or beta, or buy it when it is put out.

        I'd say there's a distinct difference.

First of all, Minecraft was cheaper before 1.0 (the "finished" project) came out, not full price.

Second, I think it was already a full product with everything that was in the game on the Alpha release, much less the subsequent ones.

Added to this is that even full price of Minecraft was less than half of full price of a normal game these days. The "excuses" were, to me, "benefits" of the way they released it and it was totally worth it.

The ARMA 3 alpha was $32.99 and the beta is $44.99 while the full release will be $59.99 so it was similar to Minecraft in that early buyers get a discount on the price.

Seriously, what IS your point? They're BIS - they have a proven track record of good post-launch support for their games already.

And seriously, they literally did what you're saying back with ArmA because the studio was otherwise out of money, and needed income to finish the game. Which they did.

I'm okay with waiting for a more polished SP campaign as long as they provide some really kickass MP content up front.

I mistakenly thought that the release was going to be in December so while I was bummed when I first saw this it all works out about the way I thought it would. I just hope they get Steam workshop support out soon for mods and user content.

it looks like steam workshop will be integrated. not too worried about lacking SP campaign, but it should be part of a launch...

If you tried playing the ArmA2 campaign, especially when it was first released - you'll know why this is a great idea! There's a reason I called our helicopter pilot "Launchpad McQuack".
