This is what the modern day looks like in Assassin's Creed 4

What will you be able to do in the modern day in AC4? There will be "various hacking games that reveal tons of secret Abstergo content."

The modern day storyline of Assassin's Creed 4 was described as "optional." It appears Ubisoft is going back on that, saying there are now a "handful" of missions that players will be "required to play." Most of the content will still be optional, although Ubisoft says "you'd be a fool not to" play that content. As previously detailed, the modern day story of Black Flag does away with Desmond and has you playing as yourself, an employee of Abstergo Entertainment in Montreal, Quebec. But what will you be able to do in the modern day? There will be "various hacking games that reveal tons of secret Abstergo content." You won't fight, however. "It’s all about exploring, eavesdropping, and hacking. Modern day pirate stuff," described in a Q&A. And what about that cliffhanger ending? Spoilers ahead. Well, you'll be glad to know that Juno "does not have enough strength to overtake the world yet... YET."

In AC4, you work in Canada

Great.... Would love some clarification from them, if I can skip it, I'd really be onboard for this game.

I'm pretty sure they've said that the modern stuff will be largely optional in AC4.

What you said though was correct, it sounds like it's still largely optional.

The modern day stuff never delivered in a compelling way, I think it was probably a bit optimistic to expect it to have panned out well.
