Supposed Whore of the Orient gameplay footage leaked

A minute of gameplay footage supposedly from Team Bondi's mysterious and ill-fated Whore of the Orient has stumbled onto the Internet, dazed and shivering as if emerging from an opium den into the harsh light of day. If it is what it's claimed to be, it's clearly from an early build, but does give a good gander at the sort of action it's aiming for.

Between Team Bondi's financial woes, shutdown, and buyout by multimedia production Kennedy Miller Mitchell, then a rumoured shutdown of KMM's games division, the fate of the game has been in question for some time.

KMM did score AU$200,000 ($180k-ish in US money) from an Australian regional arts fund in June [PDF link] for Whore of the Orient so clearly something's still going on, but it's not at all helpful that we mostly just hear whispers and rumours. And now get to see leaked gameplay.

The footage comes via VideoGamer.com, if you couldn't tell from the colossal watermark across half the screen, which says "a trusted source" provided it.

Whore of the Orient is said to be an open-world, L.A. Noire-y crime drama set in 1930s Shanghai. It's been in development for PC and next-generation consoles. "That doesn't look next-gen!" you may scoff, but do remember it's clearly an early build that wasn't intended for public consumption.

I thought Team Bondi had disbanded, but must be remembering incorrectly.

It has, but the game and its assets were bought by a media company named KMM. That company struggled along until a few months ago looking for a backer to finish Whore.

Ah. I would like to see a next-gen L.A. Noire, that game was excellent for what it was.

Looks like an LA Noire mod. Not joking. The animation looks exactly the same. Especially during the fight and gun play. Not saying thats bad... well ok, it isn't great.

Not surprising that previs gameplay would look like a game they just finished making.
