Too much 'investment' for next-gen Street Fighter, producer explains

Ultra Street Fighter IV is coming to current-gen consoles and PC, but why not next-gen? Yoshihiro Ono explains why the series isn't ready to jump in just yet.

Capcom recently announced Ultra Street Fighter 4 for current-gen consoles. With next-gen systems available by the time the add-on releases, it seemed like a curious decision. Series producer Yoshihiro Ono explains that the hesitation to jump into next-gen is a matter of resources, for both the developer and the consumer.

"Realistically speaking, developing a title for next-gen consoles requires a huge amount of staff members, and a large sum of money," Ono told Siliconera. "The issue of money also applies to everyone else, as it'll be required to invest in a new console, game, and arcade stick."

Unfortunately, neither Xbox One nor PS4 will support fight sticks from the previous generation. Knowing that it will cost hundreds of dollars to transition into the next-gen, it probably is best to avoid sticker shock for now.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Wow, sucks that PS3/360 sticks won't be supported. That seems stupid.

No peripherals from the current consoles will be supported, seems really stupid for the expensive USB ones specifically, like flight sticks and racing wheels.

I bet we'll see adapters for the old fight sticks not long after launch. They're all digital inputs over USB, someone will hack something together eventually.

I thought they had said somewhere that some stuff would work. Sucks. SUCKS.

I find that shit really ridiculous - PS4 should be supporting PS3 and PS2(!) wheels - we know it's possible if standards are implimented properly. Sigh.

Microsofts stance on wheels is basically .... ... it's . fuckit it's just garbage, they are dumb cunts.

Hmm, I thought at least the Gran Turismo guys said that older wheels would be supported probably.

It's possible that the developers will be able to support individual specific USB peripherals in their games, like how the PS3 supported mouse and keyboard?

I do know that Microsoft has said no X360 accessories will work on Xbox One. And Madcatz said recently their sticks will not work on the PS4, not sure if that's Sony's doing, but it would be strange if an old wheel would work while a simple fight stick would not. http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/13/playstation-4-incompatible-with-ps3-mad-catz-tournament-edition/

Yep they are good, unlike MS who just have no fucking idea about standards (!)?

Ok ,....... oh.mmmmmmm that sucks. Specific to sticks or wheels though? I mean sticks - it's shit to fuck people there too but at least a stick setup is $100 - a wheel setup can be $1000

                  ?

The way I understand it, which is disappointing, it looks like Sony is severing official out-of-the-box compatibility. But devs like the Gran Turismo guys can probably jump in and implement their own USB controller code so that old stuff works. Which I think they might.

I specifically just ordered a PS3 arcade stick instead of 360 too, because I thought, hey at least I'll be able to re-use it on PS4 eventually. I just hope something can be done about my crazy expensive Fanatec wheel.

The fact that investments (hardware, games) are valid and sustainable longterm on PC really is one of the strongest arguments for that platform, it's becoming more and more clear.

Devs should not have to manually hand code drivers per game. I get that ps3 controllers won't work but arcade sticks are fucking expensive and sometimes it takes YEARS for good quality peripherals to come to consoles, wave 1 and 2 are normally junk.

I'm just going to cthulu mod mine so when they update the software my stick will work on the new consoles.

I'm not tossing out my $100+ fight stick because of a new generation.

considering how many versions there have been for current gen, its pretty obvious they will port to next gen.

They may, but I'm betting that fighting game community won't budge if they have to buy new sticks, or spend any money for that matter.

Yeah, the fighting game community has no reason to migrate for a good year or two. Serious fighting-game fans play on current gen, and have invested hundreds of dollars in games, sticks, and mods for those sticks. Moreover, tournaments like EVO will feature current-gen systems and games until Capcom, Netherrealm (formerly Midway Chicago), and other big-name developers start putting out games on next-gen hardware.
