Gran Turismo movie is a thing, really happening

Gran Turismo is becoming a movie. Somehow. For real.

Two days ago, TheWrap reported that Sony's long-running Gran Turismo series would be turned into a movie. It was a rumor that was so bizarre that we decided against reporting it when it broke. Given Polyphony Digital's car racing franchise has never featured a basic shred of story ever, we thought it absurd.

Well, Hollywood sure likes to surprise.

Sony Pictures is definitely working on the film, as a separate Sony representative confirmed development to Joystiq. Attached to the film are producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti, who are currently working on Fifty Shades of Grey.

A Gran Turismo film would help Sony compete in the big-budget car-racing movie genre, which has become the-next-big-thing due to the success of The Fast & The Furious franchise. For example, EA has licensed its Need for Speed brand for a movie, due next year.

How Gran Turismo can translate into a movie I do not know. Any ideas Mr. Yoon?

Unless this film makes the fast series look like a drama there's no way I'll see it.

The track is taking forever to load!

Oh god is that really the sound of my engine? It sounds the same as it did in 1998!

Obviously it is just a name grab... but, they could base a movie on the GT Academy thing, you know, GT gamer turns in to a real life racer.

The first half of the movie will consist entirely of the opening credits to ensure the viewer gets the full experience of playing a Gran Turismo game.
