Now that Shadowrun Returns is rolling out, developer HareBrained Schemes has announced its next project. Golem Arcana is a hybrid tabletop and video game, set to start crowdfunding in early August.

A post on the HareBrained blog shows off a piece of concept art for Golem Arcana, which creator Jordan Weisman says is being split off with a small team while the bulk of the studio focuses on Shadowrun post-launch support. A short video has Weisman explaining the basics, which involves playing with real pieces on a tabletop, but letting your mobile device (with a special stylus) handle all the math and rule-keeping.

HareBrained didn't detail exactly when the project will be launching on Kickstarter or what financial goal will be set. You can check out the official site and watch the video below for more info.

It seems like a very cool idea to me. It has the potential to make a warhammer style game a bit more accessible to people who might be afraid of those type of games because the complex rules and doing math in your head. :-)

People aren't afraid of Warhammer because of math, they're afraid of Warhammer because it's fucking expensive.

I think there exists more than one group of people who are afraid of Warhammer. I'd imagine quite a few are curious about the game but just don't know how to get into it... and the rules and complexity of it definitely scare some people off. Others are simply afraid of neckbeards or inadvertently becoming an orbiting satellite of one of their massive fellow players. Disclaimer: No true offense meant to people who play Warhammer - I'm just playing off of common stereotypes here. Warhammer is awesome.

The other problem is logistics. Finding a space (other than a local game shop) to play can be pretty impossible depending on your living situation.

That is pretty much it, yeah. Tabletop wargaming is a very expensive hobby.

“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.” ― C.S. Lewis

There's something unique about having physical play pieces that can't be expressed via an entirely digital medium. That's why board games are still so popular.

Sure, the Skylanders series is aimed at young children, but Eye of Judgement, for example, was definitely more for adults.

I love when the cutting edge tech of video games crosses over with classic board games, I really want to see more of this kind of thing.
