SimCity survey gauges interest in offline mode and bigger cities

Apparently, Microsoft isn't the only company considering straying from its vision of online-only gaming. Maxis' much-criticized SimCity may also sever ties with the cloud to offer an offline mode for players.

"Classic Mode" would offer a "single functioning city" that can be played online or off, and can be toyed around with cheats and unlocks. It's one of the many "potential features" EA has name-dropped in a survey sent to players.

Other key features include bigger cities that are twice the current city size. There could also be one-way roads, subways, and terraforming--all things that sound like they should have been in the game's original release.

There's also the intriguing idea of importing Sims and neighborhoods from The Sims. For a glance at the survey, check out Reddit (via VideoGamer).

Why one? I can't we just make a bunch of them offline? or am I not understanding this correctly?

You didn't misunderstand it. It's just ONE city.

They still did not get the message it seems. Haven't bought the game and it didn't seem like this is going to make me change my mind. Not if the game still is broken beyond belief like most people said.

Pretty sure it's just in contrast to the multi-city regions, you would probably be able to have more than one. The 'potential feature' they ask about re: city size is just 2x current size though.

Well then it would be even worse, right? WIth the city that small (even if they increase it to be twice the size), you can't possibly build everything in one city.

            I guess when I typed city, I always imagined 1 region...Oh well.

Is this for a patch or market research for the first addon.

If they could at the very least make regions with cities that all connect (as in, no mandatory dead space between), that would make me far more interested in playing.

But still, offline mode, better balance, cities that can function on their own, and a lot of these things they already list might make me come back.

I like the teamplay aspect of what they made, but the inability to easily remove people and/or have someone else take control of a city when a player is absent made the whole thing pointless.

Your last paragraph is perfectly put.

Also... Why can't I just wipe cities?!

Silly Maxis there's no such thing as an offline MMO.

Just get it back to feature parity with Simcity 4 (hell Simcity 2k) and then start worrying about the Japanese pack, or blimps.

I think the best part is in that survey how many things that existed in previous games they are asking if people want back. Yes you morons!

Did they ever fix the "taking over an abandoned city, but I don't have the freaking DLC so I can't take over" crap?

Haha yea, I mean they really need a survey for this? Their heads are that far up their own asses? Wait don't answer that....

I will buy your game if you offer an offline mode that allows everything the online mode does, minus the multiplayer. That's the bottom line for me.

I never received an email with this survey, yet I own SCV. But, I've never bothered to play it due to the omission of the exact things which this survey purportedly asks users if they'd like. Yes to all. I won't play it until there's offline and larger maps. The other items are pretty important, too.

LOL. where's the foot-in-mouth community managers from EA now

The Community Management team deserves a medal; they had to deal with all the crap that resulted from the bad release. They don't deserve the blame. The MARKETING teams of EA Maxis and EA deserve the blame, as do those responsible for the business plan, as well as the architectural deficiencies of the online solution.

They can, actually, be put to blame. They facilitated the bad marketing, business plan, etc. They didn't offer any type of constructive criticism to the team. The CM's are the people who are the bridge between Developer and Community. They didn't pass on the worries and struggles of the community. So yes, they can be blamed in the entire mess.

Twice the size? I doubt people will even see that difference.
If this imagine is anywhere close to reality, http://i.imgur.com/A3b5R4J.jpg?1 , we need like 10x bigger size to match the old simcity :S

if SimiCity 4 was on the same model, I wouldn't be able to play it today cause EA would turn off the server long time ago. give me offline, huge city size, and i'll buy this POS for $5 during next Steam sale.

      ps, put it on Steam.

If they completely remove the online requirement, give me a full featured city
builder that creates a great nostalgia from the original and actually sold
the game to a respectable company i might consider buying it.
