Piranha Games announced the official release date for MechWarrior Online today. After a lengthy beta test, it will launch version 1.0 on September 17. This came alongside a few new mechs joining the fray in the currently running beta.

For a game that hasn't launched, though, it's racked up some impressive play stats in the open beta. It now boasts more than one million registered users, who have logged more than 9.6 million hours piloting their Mechs, resulting in 46,941,487 destroyed mechs. To really drive the comparison home, Piranha pointed out that the mechs have fired approximately 12 billion missiles during the open beta.

Today, an update adds the Dragon Slayer Hero Mech (trailer below), and four new Trial mechs. Full patch notes for today's update are available at the forums.

Hooray! Lots of content incoming over the next couple months, then. Good time to check the game out if you haven't (they won't be resetting your stuff when the game goes to 1.0).

Is the game essentially just deathmatch and team deathmatch? The lack of complex objectives turned me off from the game.

It is an online team 8 vs 8 (soon 12 vs 12) deathmatch only game. But the depth comes in the variety of mechs and weapons and how you configure your mech to fit your play style. Also since just piloting the mech has a bit of a learning curve, there is satisfaction in just piloting well and getting a few kills. And if you play with friends (we have at least one lance of Shackers playing almost every night) it's a whole new game and 100x more fun.

I consider myself a very finicky player. MWO has not only held my interest throughout the beta but has even had me spending $$$ for things. The game is fantastic.
