Ubisoft hacked: logins compromised; payment details safe

If the Great Video Game Hacking Spree of Spring 2011 didn't convince you to start using different passwords for every account, oh dear: time to change everything again. Ubisoft has confirmed that its account database was hacked, giving a miscreant access to user names, e-mail addresses and encrypted passwords. Thankfully, credit card details are safe.

"We recently found that one of our Web sites was exploited to gain unauthorized access to some of our online systems. We instantly took steps to close off this access, to begin a thorough investigation with relevant authorities, internal and external security experts, and to start restoring the integrity of any compromised systems," Ubisoft says. "No personal payment information is stored with Ubisoft, meaning your debit/credit card information was safe from this intrusion."

It doesn't say how long it took to discover the hack, unhelpfully. Nor does it go into details on exactly which website the hacker exploited to nab credentials.

Ubi swears that passwords were encrypted but warns they still might be cracked, so it recommends changing the password on your Ubisoft account. And any other account which shares the same password or a similar one, though surely you know better than that now.
