Hey, remember when Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon won over the love of the internet? Capitalizing on the collective nostalgia for the 80s, the downloadable game managed to sell over 500,000 copies in under two months. As a standalone release, Blood Dragon also managed to spike sales of the original Far Cry 3, especially on PC.

CEO Yves Guillemot is undoubtedly "very happy" with the performance of Blood Dragon, telling GI.biz that the game has surpassed Ubisoft's expectations. Its success will allow Ubisoft to "further explore that formula of downloadable brand extensions in the future." Perhaps Blood Dragon really is destined to become a new franchise?

Ubisoft's other big downloadable for the year, Call of Juarez: Gunslinger has also done well. However, Ubisoft did not disclose any specific sales figures for that title.

Awesome. Loved Blood Dragon and heard good things about Gunslinger. I would love to see more games that are shorter and cheaper.

Blood Dragon definitely felt too short, and I say that having done every garrison capture and side mission available. I had fun with it, but it very clearly was put together quickly and slapped onto another game.

The game felt short, but I felt tired of the mechanics by the end.
The level design was getting boring as well, but that is mostly due to the engine, which sucks for indoors.

The music was fantastic and I think that they didn't skimp on that front however.

I would imagine you felt tired of the mechanics because the game really didn't change at all from beginning to end. They clearly just didn't have time to do much except re-skin everything and implement a few missions. I really liked what they did with the story and everything, but I'm sure they could have made a more engaging gameplay experience with more time spent on it.

I thought it was the perfect length for the price. It would have gotten really boring if the game was any longer.

How about instead it allows you to explore further into unconventional visuals and concepts? Which I think is part of its success.

Seriously. They have no idea what made it successful. Good job.

I always home when I read stuff like that that its PR speak and they have better, really reasons in the actually meetings about it. But usually am disappointed.

I think it means they're more willing to experiment with smaller projects like it.

Actually, " downloadable brand extensions" are exactly what allow them to explore those two things.

Just beat the game for the first time last night - thoroughly fantastic. I haven't laughed this hard (out loud) while playing something in quite some time.

I'm very glad this game succeeded.

Dunno, but they did do that live action short for it, doubt that was cheap.

The game was made on a very cheap budget compared to most Ubisoft productions and they had something like a 9-12 month schedule.

Ubisoft started their own film division, so I'm going to assume all of that was internal (and relatively cheap)

Way to go Ubisoft letting your game designers get creative and make something off the wall fun and amusing to play... You should be ashamed!
