Contra Evolution remasters original for iOS on June 27

Contra was a beloved staple of the 80's and now the original is coming remastered to iOS after spending most of the year exclusive to China.

Over 25 years after the original Contra hit arcades and the NES, Konami's classic run-and-gun franchise is set to return with a bit of a facelift. Chinese developers CocoaChina and Chukong are working with Konami on Contra Evolution, an iOS remastering of the original classic.

For those unfamiliar with old-school Contra, two Rambo-types named Bill "Mad Dog" Rizer and Lance "Scorpion" Bean fought off the forces of Red Falcon, an alien terrorist force, with guns and lots of them. All of it was awesome, because, of course, it was the 1980's. Contra Evolution looks to keep that spirit alive with some graphical upgrades.

Kotaku points out that Contra Evolution released earlier this year in China and briefly leaked out here in the U.S. before it was suddenly pulled. It'll officially hit the iOS App Store on June 27 for $0.99 on iPhone/iPod Touch and $2.99 on iPad.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

An excruciatingly difficult game from the 80's on a platform with no buttons? What could possibly go wrong?

This is without even asking how the heck the Konami Code is supposed to work.

I just skimmed the article and was only posting it since it was the first thing that searching for something about the new game controller API found.

That's all. NFC about handheld consoles. Though I would have to assume that mobile phones and tablets have already significantly diminished the demand for hand held consoles.

Was Contra "excruciatingly" difficult? I mean, I was beating it when I was a kid, and I sucked at video games. A lot.

Without the code I think I only managed to get through the first 3 levels if I remember correctly.

a remaster of this game will never outshine the glorious nintendo 8-bit version.... once you master contra, it's like a 15-20min. game? why even bother. what are these people thinking?

They're thinking that for $1 or $3, a lot of people will pay to play something nostalgic on their phone or tablet.

I'm sure they will make plenty of money.

If it were released on something with a controller, I'd be all over it. Shame about this iOS bullshittery.
