Sure, there's all the fancy real-time destruction that the franchise is known for. But equally impressive is how the engine is able to render wind physics through trees. Perhaps the most impressive feature is what they call "networked water simulation," so that all players will be able to see the same waves and the same time--even when a fighter jet plops into the ocean. It's all to create what DICE calls a "seamless reality."

Frustratingly for Nintendo fans, the video says Frostbite 3 "runs on everything from iPhone to next-generation consoles." But apparently, not Wii U.

Not really a dig at Nintendo as it is EA. If they say it can run on everything from mobile to next-gen, it SHOULD work on Wii U.

The BF4 game looked great and played great too at E3.

However the sound engine has always impressed me with Frostbite games from DICE especially started with Bad Company.

Me, too. I have my stereo hooked up to my system and I always switch to it for Battlefield. Not a lot of games improve that much from muting the LCD speakers and going to proper stereo but those games definitely do.

the environmental physics are really cool, but the thing I am most excited for in the next generation of games is character realism. Better facial animations, realistic eyes, lighting/diffusion, textures, etc. That stuff is going to bring games to life.

Looks great but it's always disappointing knowing that the level of graphics you see in the singleplayer will never be seen in multiplayer. The water looks awesome in singleplayer but multiplayer the quality will be dramatically reduced.

And THIS is why im not going 1440p yet. This is probably going to ass pound my 570 into dust, hopefully 760tis will be enough to run this on near ultra. (or maybe after my wedding i dip into the house fund a little and just go 770).

yeah same here. i'm happy with 1080 / 1200p. I'll upgrade to 1440p when I have some serious muscle that can push next-gen titles (stuff that will start launching in 2014) at that res with max details.

Big difference between 'being' able to run on Wii U and taking the time to port the engine to very small install base. I would assume it might be technically possible, but probably not financially viable due to the low console sell rate.

They did say they had implemented "networked waves", meaning the waves looks identical on all clients. That sort of suggests it will be in multiplayer as well. :)

But big boat combat? Or just the skiffs/zodiacs of bf2 days?

I would love a massive midway style map with two carrier groups battling it out. Even better if it's set in a wicked pacific storm.

Seems so they show a fighter jet sliding of the deck of a ship, I couldn't tell if it was MP or not. They also showed what appeared to be MP battles on a nighttime map with lightning which showed no land close by and two aircraft carriers/destroyers. So hopefully, yes naval combat is back.

Hey guys lets make this amazing engine that can do all this stuff, but lets prioritize the game around outdated consoles. So client-side hit detection, less detailed graphics, static destruction, poor vehicle controls, and get rid of everything else that the PC does better.

No comments on cheat detection either in the video or in the comments section. Thats what really ruined BF3 for me and I'm sure despite all this awesome shit happening in the video, there will be a guy sitting in spawn knifing the air and getting kills across the map.

I'm not sure how that didn't go viral. It's the most ridiculous sort of cheating ever.

State of the art game engine uses ancient PB engine to try and catch state of the art cheaters... anyone else see anything wrong with this?

yea that aspect is certainly pretty infuriating. I dont think I'd ever be able to play BF3/BF4 'for srs' because yea the cheats are easy and annoying but its ok i just play for funzies and to feel like im in a real goddam conflict and enjoy the audio/visuals

I have encountered maybe, maybe 20 or so hackers in 900hrs of BF3. Probably less. Certainly not enough to ruin the game for me.

I dont get why these type of cheaters are a problem. Obvious cheaters are awesome, just ban them or find another server. Way worse is the kind you have to spectate for 15 minutes to figure out if he's just good or there is more to it.. I don't play that much online FPS anymore, and certainly dont admin any servers, but back in the CS days i'd much rather have a cheater that was in spawn within 5 seconds and headshotting everyone, than a subtle cheater I had to watch for several rounds.

          June 25, 2013 4:52 AM

I was using a obvious example to illustrate how blatant some cheating is, not to rate the severity of different kinds of hacks.

I also agree though. I've had my fair share of babysitting. Really good cheaters are a pain in the ass. They eat a lot of time, a lot of manpower, and a lot of fun. Some community servers it takes months to build a case against someone because it takes that much proof and that long before they really fuck up to the point where the majority of the admins can agree they're hacking.

I shouldn't need to do that in a game I'm playing for fun. It's the complete opposite of it. I eventually started completely ignoring it as some people have a really hard time differentiate what looks like cheating using inferences (like someone aiming at someone else through a wall or leading them).

Alright...that engine is pretty fucking sweet. Glad to see them focusing on the things that make the world dynamic, rather than just pretty. Waves that react dynamically to both the weather conditions and the vehicles and explosions in the water? That's the kind of innovation I've been waiting for :)
