F-Zero series difficult to innovate, says Miyamoto

Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto says he understands why people want a new F=Zero, but he says he doesn't "really have a good idea for what's new that we could bring to F-Zero."

The new gravity-defying mechanics of Mario Kart 8 drew comparisons to the long-dormant F-Zero series. While this may whet fans appetite for more, aAccording to Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, the company has hit something of a creative slump with that series.

"I certainly understand that people want a new F-Zero game," Miyamoto told IGN. "I think where I struggle is that I don't really have a good idea for what's new that we could bring to F-Zero that would really turn it into a great game again. Certainly I can see how people looking at Mario Kart 8 could see, through the anti-gravity, a connection to F-Zero. But I don't know, at this point, what direction we could go in with a new F-Zero."

Miyamoto then talked more broadly about balancing new with old, and said that the company has been growing lately to allow for more internal projects.

"We come to the show and we bring a lot of great franchises and everyone says, 'Oh, well, where’s this game that I want to play? Where's something new?' I only have so much capacity. [laughs] Obviously in the past we've tried to work with other companies, where we've let them develop games for us in franchises like Star Fox and F-Zero, but the more we think about it, the more we prefer to be able to create those games internally, on our own."

The last console game in the franchise was F-Zero GX for Gamecube, released in 2003. That game was developed by the now-defunct Amusement Vision at Sega. With Miyamoto's hesitance to outsource their games, and the original GX team long gone, the future of F-Zero doesn't look especially bright.

If they're willing to slap together that shitty New super mario brothers and a ton of other shit, I can't imagine what they consider difficult is in terms of innovating Fzero.

      Here's innovative: Create a beautiful, low-poly minimally-designed F-Zero with cross-platform 3DS and WiiU internet play.

How about an updated, slick looking, great playing remake? I don't particularly care. I mean im tired of playing the pixelated versions I'm forced to endure.

I'd like more multipath courses, up to date graphics, multiplayer, and a sp learning curve like wave race. I can't say it would sell but I'd buy.

Then again I like rally games so what do i know.

Just give the game to someone else. I know the company is built on Miyamoto, but they need to find others to innovate for the sake of the companies future. Give the game to Retro and let them do what they want. They've already tackled Metroid and Donkey Kong. Time for something new.

I STILL play GX. A simple port to the Wii U would enable me to put my Gamecube into stasis. When your game is the global maxima for a type of experience, just keep it running on hardware in my living room, thanks.

Ideas: Have it so you can shed parts of your racer to gain speed but you lose control accuracy. Have it so you can race on your side so you can fit through narrow gaps. Cross traffic that you navigate through. And flash bangs that can make it difficult for other players to navigate for three seconds.
