PS4 momentum grows after E3, survey shows

Interest in PS4 has continue to grow after Sony and Microsoft showed off their wares at E3 last week. Once again, we surveyed GameFly fans about their interest in the two next-gen consoles. We recorded responses before Microsoft's Xbox One reveal, after, and after the conclusion of E3.

While interest in PS4 increased following Xbox One's reveal, it appears that Microsoft lost significant ground during the trade show. Whereas about 38 percent of fans were more interested in Microsoft's new console at the beginning of the year, the figure currently stands at 18 percent. PlayStation 4 currently has 72.2 percent allegiance.

Obviously, with the poll surveying GameFly users, results may be skewed. (Note: Xbox One currently does not support rental games; GameFly is a game rental service.) However, other polls conducted by CVG, Amazon, and Gamespot show similar results.

Although PS4 has a $100 price advantage over Xbox One, it appears very few people were swayed by that difference. Instead, it appears Sony's more gamer-friendly policies have earned them sway. "I pick the one that lets me play used games," Wesley Metz said. "Love the Xbox, but hate DRM. Going with PlayStation this time, I guess. I'm not very happy about it," Mike Rew said.

However, although Microsoft may be performing poorly in the poll, Xbox still has ardent fans. "The TV functionality looks awesome and services on Xbox are far superior," Sean McMurran said. "PS fans can no longer say their Internet is free either." At E3, Sony stealthily made PlayStation Plus a requirement for online gaming on PS4. "Still going with the Xbox One! Loyal to Microsoft," Chris L said.

Some Microsoft fans are waiting for the publisher to rescind their policies before jumping into the next generation. "Neither. Xbox pissed me off and I don't like the PlayStation," Patrick Judge said. "Guess I'll play my 360 until Microsoft gets their head out of their butt and does a full retraction." Thankfully for Judge, there's quite a number of current-gen games coming later this year.

We'll update this survey again after Gamescom, where the two manufacturers will likely have more information to share.

Considering this is a gamefly poll... not really surprised since GameFly won't work on XBone.

This poll is inline with every other Internet poll there has been like it. IGN, Twitter, Amazon and Gamestop all have had polls with similar results and those are just the larger ones. But I'm sure it's just one big Internet conspiracy.

I see how a rental service conducting a poll concerning a system that fights used games seems unbiased, but the poll is relevant. Many gamers still rent games. Gamefly is a rental service. Any gamer who uses GameFly for game rentals--and I suspect most do, since brick-and-mortar rental stores are few and far between--would have obvious reason to shy away from a system that won't let them save money by renting games rather than shelling out $60+ for them.

I am not doubting the relevancy of the poll, just was making an observation. I definitely think that most polls have PS4 winning the hearts of gamers thus far.

I saw my younger brother at my parent's house yesterday for Father's Day. He is the total "Bro Gamer" that the One seemed aimed for. He plays Call of Duty and Madden and occasionally other stuff. He wears caps and cargo shorts year round. He watches Game of Thrones on his 360. He is obsessed with fantasy football. He doesn't follow game news or any of that kind of stuff. I asked him if he ordered a One already, because dude would marry his 360 if he could. He said he wasn't buying "that piece of shit". He went on to mention the always on requirement, the required and forced on Kinect at all times, the 24 hour check in, the added price tag and no used or rented games. He was the one guy I know who I could have sworn wouldn't have cared about the bad press and was just getting an Xbox because he liked Xbox. He in fact had ordered the PS4 Watchdogs bundle on Amazon. They are even losing members of the Bro Games set.

Yeah, I think Microsoft is hoping they will keep customers like this. Unfortunately the hole they dug themselves is just so large that even the most hardcore Xbox user has to be upset about how they've handled the announcement.

Even with all of this, I still think the $100 price difference will be the main factor of getting either a PS4/Xbone.

        Yeah, my anecdotal story:

My company has a core of about 40 gamers that all own an Xbox 360 currently to play with each other and their friends. Most of them are the primary COD type players and a lot of them don't own a PS3 or have ever owned a Sony console. They are all moving to the PS4 next generation, mostly because their hardcore friends are doing so and they want to play multiplayer games with them.

the fact that no one really knows what the advantages are hurts too.

personally, i do like the idea of a digital only library on a major console but all the other systems already do that anyway. i'm assuming the xbone is built around it rather than just having a digital library as an option. if im interpreting everything correctly, you don't even need the disc anymore after installing.

The worst part is that there are now people actively rooting for it to fail. MS didn't just lose friends, they made enemies.

They lost me when I saw that I had to pay just to use You-fucking-tube on the 360. Putting every damn thing behind a pay wall is just too much.

Then E3 happenned and more information was clear to them, they both still plan to buy an Xbox One but instead of being the only choice, they are getting a PS4 first.

      http://chattypics.com/files/Clipboard02_9zkrihjcii.png

Not because the Oculus Rift took the lead, I am actually more interested in the possibilities for gaming and immersion with that thing than the new consoles. But that that the fucking Nvidia Shield beat the Xbox One. What?? I know people vote jokingly in those things but it still blew my mind seeing that on a gaming site with a ton of Xbox fans.

well.... duh? on the heels of E3, that survey closely reflects the gamers, mostly, right? so the PS4 seemed to shine brighter for just the gaming factor. however microsoft is taking a leap beyond just games, and when that marketing kicks in, will things change?

what of people that aren't hovering over E3... will Sony or MS suit them better? what about when MS starts touting skype and such?

EA has a pretty bad track record with a lot of things like online servers and buggy games. and yet people bought up simcity and are all excited about BF4. people should be voting with their dollars, not useless polls.

anyway, consoles and gaming platforms do flop. the n-gage thing is one example, i'm not sure if the dreamcast falls under this umbrella but that one ended up killing sega in the hardware market.

so i'm interested to see what happens in the next couple of months
