PlayStation 4 is incredibly small. It may be hard to tell in photos, but the hardware is tiny. Official specs released by Sony show that PS4 is closer in size to the PS3 Slim than Sony's launch PS3.

Unfortunately, Microsoft has not released concrete numbers on Xbox One, leaving it to internet sleuths to attempt extrapolating that data based on official photos and measuring USB ports (which should be the same size on every device). This photo (via CVG) has been making the rounds, highlighting that Xbox One has a larger footprint than PS4.

The hard-to-see disc drive of PS4 does call into question doubts over the accuracy of the image. However, NeoGAF members seem to agree that this is the real deal. The forum also notes that while Xbox One still has an external power source (aka "power brick"), PS4 does not.

However, because of the way the image is constructed, the Xbox One comes off as much larger than it actually is. While PS4 is smaller in volume and width, this image shows that PS4 is actually longer than Xbox One. Still, given the way you'll likely position these systems in your living room, this comparison is still apt.

I can't see this thing not having at least some heating issues. It's a teansy box, I haven't seen any vents or stuff, and it packs more power than the much bigger One.

I hope the PS4 doesn't require me to place the console on top of soup cans to get good airflow like the fat PS3 does.

Holy shit, does that help? I'll have to buy some soup. My PS3 sounds like a fat kid going for the Presidential Physical Fitness Award.

Tremendously. Mine would sound like a Shop Vac when I would be watching something on Netflix. Just put four cans under it, without blocking any vents if you can. It still does it every now & then, but nothing like it used to.

I thought optical has less bandwidth than hdmi. Is there a reason to include it still?

            June 12, 2013 12:11 PM

Some people have older setups where their receiver doesn't have an HDMI input. So this helps them out, I would think.

In any case I am so glad that next-gen hardware (and the later revisions of current-gen) got away from proprietary audio/video connectors and just gave us hdmi/etc ports.

Ya the the move to HDMI is actually quite handy, it's nice having one less (fragile in this case) cable to deal with.

Plenty of older integrated amps don't have HDMI capability and need optical.

how do you see this having heat problems when there are laptops that are smaller that do just fine?

Most laptops aren't running at full throttle the entire time they are on, unlike gaming consoles.

The APU designs are fairly different because of the esram - pretty sure the Xbone APU is more complicated, larger, and will likely run hotter despite the fact that it has less raw power on paper because of the complexity/size

Very misleading picture. Here's a better one: http://www.psmania.net/2013/05/sizing-up-the-console-war-xbox-one-dimensions-revealed/

I still think the ps4 looks better though.

      • reply

Since that gives dimensions, it really isn't misleading at all:

PS4 total volume: 259.2 cubic inches.

XBox One total volume: 449.28 cubic inches.

        The PS4 is significantly smaller.

Also the PS4 is even smaller than the PS3 slim version 1 which has a volume of 332.7 cubic inches.

Not really imo. You can have a design that downplays size in a way that it might look smaller than it actually is.

Don't care. The real test is how much noise it makes. And I'd wager a larger console has better heat dissipation, larger heat sinks, whatever, so it may be quieter. Maybe.

But who knows. Either way, it will be locked inside a cabinet all the time.

I think Microsoft is making absolutely sure this thing has ZERO issues with heat. After the RROD thing I'm pretty sure they are over compensating. Which I for one don't mind. I worried about either noise or heat being a real problem for the PS4.
