Resistance and Ratchet & Clank creator Insomniac Games only recently released its first non-Sony-exclusive game, Fuse, but oh my it's really going wild with ditching that exclusivity. During Microsoft's pre-E3 press conference today, the studio announced Sunset Overdrive, an open-world shooter exclusive to Xbox One.
Insomniac CEO Ted Price described Sunset as a "fast-paced, traversal-driven" shooter, a "living world game" where the developer can add and change content on a daily basis.
It's a post-apocalyptic affair, only you don't go scavenging for supplies. You kill monsters.
"With an arsenal of kick-ass, overpowered weapons and a knack for traversing the city with hyper agility, it's not the end of days for you. This is your awesomepocalypse," says its website. Oh, and it apparently has multiplayer. Delightful.
The announcement trailer featured a delightful amount of parkour, with people sliding down roofs, running along walls, leaping from building to building, and firing LPs into silly monsters' faces. Oh yes, it's awfully stylised, with a cartoonish flair and lots of colours. The trailer's certainly not gameplay but it does seem to use in-engine art, at least.
"While we are excited about partnering with Microsoft on Sunset Overdrive, that doesn't mean we can't or wouldn't make games with our longtime friends at Sony," Price said in a blog post to assuage the fears of Ratchet & Clank fans. "That's the magic of being an independent developer."
