Thief trailer shows Garrett's love of theft, no gameplay

Garrett is making his return in a new Thief, and just in case you forgot who he is and what he loves, a new trailer tells you that he loves to steal. Its a nice video, but again, don't expect any gameplay. You didn't want to see that any way, did you?

We get to hear more of the gravelly tones of Garrett's new voice actor, Stephen Russell, and a brief mention of some of the tools he will be using. Unfortunately there isn't too much new but pretty (dark) graphics and a backstory most of us are familiar with.

If you want more Thief, here is is. The game is coming to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sometime next year.

My give-a-damn-meter is directly connected to actual gameplay footage. Until then, it's all kind of pointless.

New VO guy is alright, they seem to be on track with the theme and atmosphere, not sure about that bow, music sounds good. I'll take it.

Stephen Russel's the original voice of Garret, not the guy they're using now.

Imagine a story read by Morgan Freeman... instead being read by Samuel L. Jackson. It doesn't really matter how awesome the new guy is, you're expecting Morgan Freeman. Same goes for Thief - why didn't they just say it was Garrett's protege? Anything else would have immediately been accepted as 'ok, new character, new voiceover, no problemo.'

The reuse of Garret with a different voice is kinda dumb, and their reasons for the change still sound pretty flimsy but presuming the as yet unseen game is good, I'll get over it.

I will be sad if there's no Benny though. Best worst guard ever.

There's no drunk Benny. I've been disappointed a few times now listening to the developers on the Facebook page talking about the game. The City no longer contains Mechanists or Hammerites. Established characters like Victoria are gone along with the lore surrounding the Pagans. Garrett can perform takedowns DX:HR style. I'll never understand why developers feel like they have to reinvent the wheel when building off of an established IP, rather than extending and building off of the rich world that existed. You can't really go wrong with a next gen implementation of classic Thief gameplay and history, but whatever.
