The id Surprise is...
by Steve Gibson, Jul 19, 2000 1:42pm PDTWell it looks like we got our panties in a wad over not much. The id Surprise (and follow-up) that Graeme Devine mentioned in his .plan update a few days ago looks to be just the Q3A mission pack running on a Mac under OSX. Here's an email from Andrea Sala who is attending the show:
...I found my way down to the ATI booth, where a guy told me that the surprise was going to be Graeme Devine showing Team: arena running on a MAC with a new radeon ... On another note, the G4 Cube was really cool, and the new mouse was really nifty too...3 other emails from people attending the show say the same thing. Ah well.6:30 update: Where did ATI go for the presentation? Check out this story on IMG.

People, it doesn't trounce P3s or Athlons in Quake3... Carmack said it himself... (someone find the quote)....
It's a decent processor, more advanced and elegant than the current x86 offerings, but the PowerPC always has been...
Ah well.

Sure the gameplay is unparalleled, but I don't know anyone who is satisfied with the maps in quake3. When I get my hands on RA3, I'm hoping to see the real quake3:arena.
They can shove their teamarena up their rectums. Preferrably the tin version if it's available.

But, disregarding that. I'm surprised at how much fun I find the game to be. The bot AI and the presentation felt light years beyond Q3A. And even the "feel" was a lot better after I changed the fov to 105. Plus I even started to like Domination.
I really believe that this game would have totally OWNED had it used a different engine capable of running better in D3d and pushing at least as much polygons as Q1.

Though itÂ’s less than one quarter the size of most PCs, the G4 Cube delivers far greater performance. With its built-in Velocity Engine, the G4 processor reaches speeds of over one billion calculations per second. Humbling even the fastest Pentium III. And giving you more than enough horsepower for the most demanding uses, from desktop publishing to making Desktop Movies, and from playing ultra-realistic 3D games to enjoying the latest DVD movies.
The 450MHz Power Mac G4 Cube comes ready for action with Mac OS 9, 64MB of high-performance RAM, 1MB of backside level 2 cache, a capacious 20GB Ultra ATA/66 hard disk drive, DVD-ROM drive with DVD-Video playback, and the ATI RAGE 128 Pro graphics card with 16MB of graphics memory.
Humbles the fastest Pentium 3? WHOSE PENTIUM 3? 450MHz - 64 MB Ram?
Who are these people trying to fool?
Can't Apple be sued for claiming this bullshite?

I'm worried that the new weapons would be incorparated into regular DM and force people to have to buy this shit to play on most servers. That would be very ghey. I paid a little over $40 for the game. The price off the add-on is definately not justified. I continue to be underwhelmed by id in general.

Really, who cares about Macs? All Apple is really about is locking a user into a proprietary system & sucking their wallets dry.
If they had balls, they would port their oh so wonderful new OS over to the x86 CPU & give MS a run for their money. Then again, that probably wouldn't work because we would all get to see just how assified it really is without being locked into a proprietary hardware platform first.
