Mac owners have yet to try Maxis' rebooted SimCity. Given the troubled launch of the PC original, perhaps they've been spared.

Originally due next week, Maxis has announced that the Mac version of SimCity has been delayed to August. "We have made this tough decision because we do not believe it is ready for primetime yet," senior producer Kip Katsarelis said. "We want to ensure the Mac is a great experience for our players and that is why we are taking more time."

In an effort to save face, EA had to give PC owners of SimCity free games as recompense for SimCity's botched launch. Mac owners are also getting a gift as an apology for the extended delay: the Launch Park.

The PC version is also getting further improvements, with update 5 focusing on improvements to multiplayer and multi-city play. Those tweaks can be found on the game's official blog.

Can the new SimCity bomb any worse?

I guess it didn't bomb per say, http://www.shacknews.com/article/79091/simcity-sales-at-16-million-since-launch but the launch was a disaster.

It's already being heavily discounted, which isn't a good sign. Still, those sales numbers are pretty damn good.

The pinch will be felt when they make the next simcity game (or try to sell the rights)

It's a success, not a bomb. Bad PR in the gaming press doesn't change the fact that the SimCity audience is a wide range of ages, including kids and seniors, who don't read the gaming press and frankly don't care that it isn't as good as Sim City 2000 which they've never played.

It's a 'success' because their forecasts were low for a PC game. I believe they said it was already double their forecast at 1.1 Million units sold (first month).

It was among other very very high forecasts in EA's FY2013 portfolio that vastly underwhelmed (Medal of Honor Warfighter, Dead Space 3, Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel), plus a now-infamous "games-as-a-service" infrastructure failure (to the point where it was embarassing NON-EA developers of "games-as-a-service" games: http://www.shacknews.com/chatty?id=30083817#item_30083817 ).

To say that the new SimCity sold 1.6 million two weeks in is missing the forest for the trees (especially considering that one week after SimCity released, John Riccitiello resigned as CEO).

I suspect they had too many partnership/promotional deals riding on that specific release date

Yeah. That toothpaste promo deal would have been pretty hilarious if you had to redeem your rewards in a game that's already being shut down or a game that wasn't yet released.
