PCnauts and mobileers have known the (intermittent) pleasures of free-to-play for quite some time, but consoles haven't explored it to nearly the same extent. It'll surely be more of a focus as we move into the next console generation and look: Digital Extremes's co-op stabby shooter Warframe is coming to PlayStation 4 as a launch title.

"Sony caught wind of [Warframe], and said, 'hey, what do you think of bringing it over to PlayStation 4?', and we were very surprised to hear that," creative director Steve Sinclair told IGN. He didn't explicitly rule out an Xbox One version, but said "so far" it's looking like Warframe will be exclusive to PS4 amongst consoles.

While Microsoft bafflingly still requires games have an actual publisher, even on Xbox One, Sony wisely allows indies to self-publish. Which is pretty pleasing for Digital Extremes as, in Sinclair's words, it "retain[s] control of the game, and we don't have to necessarily get into bed with a publisher and sell away our ideas and kind of lose our creative vision for the game."
