When Sony debuted PS4, it showcased the ability to stream games to Vita via Remote Play. And apparently, supporting Sony's handheld is now mandatory for most games coming to Sony's new home console.

"Yes, it's true unless the game requires specific hardware like the camera," Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said on Twitter. "It will be great to play PS4 games on PS Vita."

The decision will certainly be a boon for the long-suffering Vita handheld, which has struggled to attract a significant audience. However, it will cause more work for PS4 developers, as they will have to make sure that the game can be controlled with Vita's more restrictive pad. Compared to DualShock 4, Vita features two fewer shoulder buttons, and is missing L3 and R3 buttons in the sticks. Vita's dual touch panels will undoubtedly come into play to replicate some of these functions.

Digital Foundry notes that Remote Play works by downscaling 1080p video from PS4 to Vita's native 960x544 resolution. "Downscaling the native 1080p image for the Vita screen will lose some detail, but on the plus side we should get some great 'built-in' SSAA from the downsampling effect." a developer said in their report.

Remote Play support of console games is not new. However, support on PS3 and PSP was limited due to the software video encoding necessary via Cell SPUs, which would take away from the performance of the game. Streaming PS4 games to a handheld won't take a performance hit however, because Sony's new console "features bespoke hardware video encoding for Remote Play," meaning the mandate won't cost developers any additional computational power.

WiiU already does it with the GamePad and some games (notably NSMBU and I think all Virtual Console stuff), so it's not unprecedented. I'm definitely interested in a Vita now, too.

There is built in hardware in the PS4 that was specifically stated to handle this feature and they mentioned in the PS4 reveal that they will be providing a dead simple API to handle remote play.

That's awesome. It's kind of a pain to stream from the PS3 to the Vita now, so I hope they have stuff like waking the PS4 and starting the stream built in to tie to your Vita.

Hopefully they can figure out the 4 shoulder button issue with this. They can probably just map the buttons to the left and right sides of the rear touchpad but not sure how that will feel actually using for a lot of games that make heavy use of all 4 shoulder buttons.

The big question will be: is it as lag-free as the Wii U remote play? Nintendo spent a lot of effort minimizing the lag between the console and the gamepad.

yes, the wii-u gamepad is just fantastic, in terms of lag anyway

I played through God of War HD mostly using remote play and it pretty snappy as far as I can remember.

Sounds great, I bought a Vita last year which was fun for 2 months then forgot about it. But now people will pay an extra $200 bucks on top of a PS4.

How will controls transfer easily? Doesn't the PS4 have 2 more buttons than the Vita?

Define "remote play" - just inthe same house on wifi or what? Is it just streaming video of the game? If so, I'm ok with this. If re-texturing or calculations / lot of work needs to be done to support this, that sucks.

If they can assign buttons to the rear touch screen, it might work quite easily

Is the back touch pressure sensitive? R2 & L2 are analog triggers.

Less buttons means completely re-engineering some games and it's not as simple as just mapping one control to another and streaming a video out.
This is a bullshit feature which will hamstring things, fuck that shit and fuck handhelds.

Many games do use all buttons though. It's not that simple.

And if this means stuff like aim & shoot in PS4 action games will be on the R1 & L1 buttons again like the PS3 for vita remote play compatibility, then fuck. Hated that so much. And now the PS4 gamepad actually has more functional looking triggers back there, no addons required.

I do have to agree with you that I hate ps3 games that use the R1 L1 buttons for aiming and shooting.
