Trion Worlds has undergone yet another round of layoffs, a new report confirms. This follows layoffs in December, which largely affected the Rift team. According to sources speaking to IGN, "mostly Defiance support staff and dev staff" and "teams that provide generic responsibilities and services" have been let go.

It's unclear how many people were let go, but the report says that the bulk of the layoffs affect Trion's San Diego studio, where Defiance was developed.

The company told IGN that the layoffs were "to best position Trion in a rapidly changing industry" and that Defiance's "progress from launch to ongoing development" led to the team reduction. "As we progress from launch to ongoing development of the game, we are adjusting our staffing levels to deliver new content and improved features. Rift, and our other titles in development, were unaffected by these changes," the representative said.

Rift will be making a transition to free-to-play on June 12th, while Defiance will get DLC as its tie-in show preps for a second season.

Looks like Defiance is going the route of APB, whoops. Guess if Dust couldn't pull off the MMO FPS this IP sure as shit couldn't either.

Isn't this normal tho? They don't need everyone who made the game, just a smaller force to maintain, add content, and patch?

Yeah but how successful do you think Defiance is going to be? We really didn't need another TPS let alone one in an MMO setting. Seems like a lot of Developers nowadays are trying to chase that WOW success.

Defiance is pretty fun. Running the instances is some of the most fun I've had online.

New content? maybe they should fix all the bugs in this game.. i get the same feeling as i had when playing SWTOR when playing this game that it should still be in beta! Charging good money for an unfinished game!
