Update: Now with official details, media, and comments from Sony. A website in South Africa supposedly has gotten its hands on a early copy of a press release that officially announced Gran Turismo 6 for PlayStation 3 for the 2013 holiday season. And lo and behold, it proved to be real. "I'd like to announce today that we are developing GT 6 for the holiday season this year on the PlayStation 3," series Kazunori Yamauchi said, according to PlayStation's official Twitter account.

According to the PlayStation.Blog, the cars and tracks from Gran Turismo 5 will all return in GT6. Of course, GT6 will also add new cars and tracks, bringing the car lineup to over 1200. Seven new locations are being added to the game, taking the total up to 33. A "much-improved" course maker is also planned. GT Academy 2103 will also kick off in July with a demo of the game. "There's also a new engine, which will improve game operation. Meanwhile, we are set for expanded connectivity with other devices, and increased social and community functions," the announcement boasts. Here's the first official trailer for the game:

Weird. I was expecting this to be a PS4 title.

Same, it is really odd, well I guess there is a massive user base though.

If they where really ace they put out the same game for the PS4 but with MAX textures un cut scaled down and max poly cars and assets and then have a scaled down version for the PS3. I doubt this will be the case the engine is probably 100% for the PS3 and they would have a heck of a time porting it. Still I would of guessed it be C++ and Opengl engine? Anyone dev on PS3 here that knows?

        Hmm weird.

GT is always a graphically intensive game, so they probably optimized heavily for PS3, which means this one is probably tied tightly to the Cell architecture. That would make a port to PS4 unlikely.

Part of the reveal is that GT6 will be running on a new 'more future proof' engine. Sounds like the exact opposite of this.

Hmm, maybe they built it on top of some middleware that's portable to x86?

Maybe, but I don't really think it's the engine that is going to be a prohibiting factor here. Most of the cost, time and graphics of GT are in the assets, not the engine. To have this out by this Christmas and with the number of upgrades they are promising, it's likely this has been in the works long before PS4 dev kits let alone specs were available so that they could be targeting assets for a new console.

Same here, but would that have meant it'd be competing against Drive Club?

Nice, good point, and honestly I want this more than any other car game, well GRID 2 is up there, but I think DC will be better not sure what the customization will be like in GRID 2(I doubt it).

I was thinking of picking up GT5 XL because it's cheap. Is it in a "finished state" now? Kart racing was a blast at my buddy's house.

How many of the 1200 cars will be "premium" model cars and how many will be the car models they still had from the Playstation 2 era GT games that they didn't bother redoing?

This is my question too. The premium cars in GT5 were great but the other 800 standard cars were shitta.

All of the cars in the trailer look like premium models, some of which i recognize to be standard in GT5.

While i don't think they went through the trouble of making all of them premium, it does look like the ratio will be a lot better in GT6 at least.

There is a myriad of games that feature this. Trying my best not to sound snobby but that kind of thing is not what you will find in the series.

If I know PD, this will be a fully reskinned GT5, the backend design won't change*, the backend physics won't change*, the backend sound engine won't change*

      (* significantly that is)

It'll still load slow as fucking hell, it'll have the same odd menu design and the car audio will be garbage again.
Not falling for it this time.

Imagine if we were 18 again? Those load times wouldn't even matter, because we could afford to spend like literally 30 hours playing the game on a single weekend, it wouldn't even be a concern!
