Double Fine wants IP and distribution rights for Costume Quest, Stacking

Double Fine is actively trying to get the rights for Costume Quest, Stacking, Brutal Legend, and Iron Brigade, according to CEO Tim Schafer.

Double Fine still wants the distribution rights for Stacking and Costume Quest, according to CEO Tim Schafer. Not only that, but he says Double Fine is actively trying to get the rights to other Double Fine games as well.

"We're still trying to get the rights to Costume Quest and Stacking," Schafer told Game Informer at the Two5Six conference. "We can still make more of those games. We still have the IP, but we'd love to have all of the IP and distribution rights in house. We're trying to get the Brutal Legend IP from EA, and we're interested in Iron Brigade coming back in [from Microsoft]."

Schafer didn't detail how they might obtain those rights, but it does make sense. We heard that Double Fine was interested in assets back when THQ's properties first went on the auction block. Stacking and Costume Quest ultimately went to Nordic Games Publishing.

you won't ever see that happen unless you are referring to the rts gameplay. the money they would have to cough up for the voice and music is too much to do without big publisher help. schafer mentioned that in an interview and i don't think the game was a financial success that would attract anyone to do so.

costume quest is more likely, the first dlc a)exists b)ended on a cliffhanger c)is probably dirtcheap to produce because they have the engine, experience and writing staff and in terms of assets it didnt look like much anyway.

I didn't realise you had any part in the creation of those IPs. Every day's a school day.

Considering how much bitching goes on about how George Lucas handled the Prequels and Gabe handles the HL3 Development, you'd think that everyone on the internet is a part owner of the IP's.

Yes how dare they want the IP for the games they created. SHAME ON THEM.

I'd like more Double Fine games in general that aren't influenced by corporate "outsiders".

Poor Iron Brigade. Fun as hell game, but the pc version got totally screwed over. Hopefully they can at least get that back so they can finally strip GFWL and fix the scrap bug.

Though I don't think it matters at this point... I believe the audience left long ago. :\

I like how GFWL can trigger the code that swaps controls to the menu scheme, when you are in the game, so suddenly, you have no control unless you go to the menu, and then you have a tiny bit of control.

Fun game, but has a pretty big gameplay killing bug.

They got the rights for that back a while ago, which lead to them putting out some updates to the Steam version, and a Mac port.

They'd be making a sequel right now if they had the funds. Notch was going to chip-in until he learned how much it was actually going to cost.

if as a business decision it makes sense for them i'm cool with its but i don't want a sequel or dlc to any of those (costume quest is obvious and shafer mentioned brutal legend dlc that builds on the rpg gameplay which absolutely nobody wants).

i want psychonauts 2, the new adventure or something in that direction. their last few games were not of interest to me, middle manager of justice and the cave (though obviously the cave was ist not bad) didnt really excite me.

i'm glad that they can pursue multiple projects on a smaller scale but i wish they would find a way to finance a bigger project, maybe the chris roberts way of kickstaring the money for a prototype to get investors instead of funding the whole game like with broken age.

either way i love that studio and its culture, i just wish they would make games relevant to my interest.
unfortunately they excel at writing brilliant adventures disguised in shitty game mechanics.
