Guild Wars 2 expansion pack in development

By Steve Watts, May 14, 2013 6:00am PDT

Guild Wars 2 has been getting regular free content updates, like the Secret of Southsun due tomorrow. A full expansion pack is in the works, though, as revealed by a recent NCSoft earnings call.

Polygon reports that the most recent NCSoft earnings mentioned that the company is "preparing an expansion pack" for GW2. A company rep said that a launch date hasn't been set yet, and the publisher didn't go into detail about what the expansion would include.

This is all despite comments from ArenaNet that claimed it was not working on an expansion. The developer said in March that they were open to expansions, but it wasn't on the timetable yet and would be something to consider in the future.

    • I had a fun run with this game but in the end the PvP just wasn't all it should have been. The PvE is good stuff, well designed and executed, and they actually keep adding pretty decent content for high level players all the time as well as opposed to many past MMO's, but I had enough of that with WoW. The ladder PvP is just not my thing, which is why I never played much of GW1, and the RvR... Well, it's too much of a back and forth kind of thing. What made RvR in DAoC great was that taking a keep was an actual occasion, an operation. Guilds would hang around in them, defending them, there was a sense of community. GW2 RvR is zergs, be those guild zergs or just randoms, running around taking keeps one after another, more often than not defense is pathetic if there at all. Defending simply doesn't pay off well enough. Whatever gains my guild might get in a night are typically gone by the time I wake up the next morning. In short, it's lacking persistence. Every now and then you get a nice fight, but even then the engine has its woes and whatever you might gain in the big picture will be gone the next day.

I backed Camelot Unchained with 110EUR because I'm fucking desperate here. I want a proper RvR game. There was one 10 friggin years ago, so it's annoying when there's not a single modern one out there that comes even close to DAoC. I guess the guys behind CU are right when they say it's a niche crowd they are developing the game for. Luckily they also claim to be fine with that, and have no aspirations of trying to make the game "a big crowd pleaser".
