Battlefield 3 suffers DDOS attack, double XP weekend delayed

Battlefield 3 and the associated Battlelog service have been the target of DDOS attacks this week, resulting in downed servers and an indefinite delay to the planned double XP weekend.

Battlefield 3 servers and the associated Battlelog service have been the target of a denial of service (DDOS) attack, and a planned double XP weekend planned to start today has been delayed as a result. EA and DICE are working to restore the services.

A set of posts on the Battlelog forums (via Polygon) suggest that the attack seems aimed squarely at preventing multiplayer access. EA assures users that no data has been compromised in the attacks.

"As a part of our efforts to resolve these issues, we've conducted rolling restarts of Battlefield infrastructure servers to apply some updates," the post states. "Thank you for your patience and support while we work to get everyone back and playing Battlefield 3 as soon as possible."

A tweet from DICE also noted that the double XP weekend has been postponed indefinitely, while these problems get sorted out.

I'm so glad they decided to let people run their own private servers for Battlefield! I mean, it would be terrible if all the servers had to be rented and people couldn't play when the entire server infrastructure's single point of failure was attacked. I'm so glad that doesn't happen. Oh... wait...

That they blatantly rob people by refusing to let them run their own servers, and charge them an ungodly amount just to admin one hosted by EA, is a good reason to not give EA any of your money. Friends don't let friends buy EA.

I was blown away when I found out you can't run your own server, it's such a console-esque concept to me. What the fuck do you mean I can't run my own server?

You can not play this game in 10 years, it will not be possible in any way to play it just for nostalgia. Simple as that. Probably more like 3 years.

Can't have battlefield 3 robbing sales from battlefield 5!

Honestly for me it felt like EA's refusal to allow private servers was their way of announcing that they didn't actually want people to keep playing this game. They're going to want everyone to keep buying the next one every few years. They're really not into the idea of supporting communities for any real length of time. Gotta keep pushing these cows down the ramp, ya know?
