Dragon's Dogma a surprise success, says Capcom

Capcom has released more details for its fiscal year 2013 earnings, saying Dragon's Dogma was a surprise success.

Capcom has shared more details on its recent fiscal year 2013 results. Though Resident Evil 6 is still cited as a disappointment and DmC: Devil May Cry is only "stable," the company noted that Dragon's Dogma became an unexpected hit.

Capcom once again cited that RE6 missed its sales projections after plateauing at 4.9 million. Despite similarly missing its sales projections, DmC was said to have "stable popularity" and "solid sales." Dragon's Dogma, on the other hand, was a million-seller. It says this is greater-than-expected success in our market, especially as original titles are "unprecedented" in recent years to reach those numbers. No wonder the company intends to make it a franchise.

The announcement also noted that a few of its mobile games steadily gained new users, and existing ones like Smurf's Village and Beeline have been stable long-term. Capcom had mentioned a focus on mobile development in its prior announcements, and this sheds light on why.

Well if your expectations are low, any sales would be a success.
      Makes sense to me.

Dragon's Dogma is pretty great. There's definitely things they can do to improve a sequel, but I'm very happy with the current version.

I love the mechanics and the gameplay, but it's just so frustrating to get around the world. I've got a wee bit of the OCD and like to clear quests out, and travelling in this game just sucks.

IMO, weapons holstered, you should have unlimited stamina.

In the NG+ you get multiple port crystals to place, so that helps a little bit.

I own the original and the new dark arisen game, so I'd have unlimited portcrystals, but it's a matter of trudging through the game to get to that point, which I just haven't been inclined to do.

Yeah, moving around the world with limited stamina is annoying, but I think the dungeon-crawling bits are the most fun and it's less of an issue there.

Oh I agree, the first time you have to run to the Griffon tower. Seriously, who thought that such a long run needed to be longer by having you sprint against strong wind that will push you back?

The port crystals don't solve the issue, but they at least help a little.

I'm hoping the next game does something to make travel a little less painful.

Man, what! I loved how long some of those treks could get - half the fun of Dogma is the sense of setting out on an adventure. If anything I was a bit disappointed there weren't locations so far away it would be dawn by the time you reached them.

Stop carrying so much crap around. Lighter weight and you move faster and your stamina lasts almost forever.

RE5/6, S/SF4, DMC4/new, horrible? I don't think so. Probably you're mistaken them with From Software.

Their PC ports have been great since Lost Planet. It`s true that they use GFWL on some titles, but they seem to have wisen up and use steamworks most often than not.

What? Their PC ports are great except that some of them use GFWL, but yer it seems that they're moving to Steamworks now so all is good.

Indeed, they're one company that usually does a great job actually. Their main engine is PC-first anyway, or it was this generation (MT Framework)

I love this game and highly recommend it to anybody who hasn't payed it.

It really would be great if they put out a PC version. This one could ride the wave that Dark Souls on PC started.

      This game is amazing.

I'm going to say it though, if this game had multiplayer it would be even better. Who wouldn't want to be able to launch their assassin friend into the sky to grab onto that drake so he could knife the shit out of it in air?

Agreed. I like the weird AI of pawns, but I'd hope that a Dragon's Dogma 2 had full 4-player co op.

The whole time I was playing it I got the feeling like it should have been co-op they just didn't get around to it.

Having said that, they did do a GREAT job on the pawns and they do kind of feel like companions.

The pawns work really well, which surprised me at first and I hated changing them up for higher level ones when I couldn't find a higher level version of the ones I had.

Yep, if it had co-op it would have been an instant buy. If it was on PC, double instant megabuy. I just don't think it would hold my interest to play it alone.

Whichever one uses the most current version of blast processing.

Xbox version has slightly better framerate I think. The differences are pretty minuscule though so it really just comes down to which controller you like more.

Its a Japanese developer so more then likely ps3. Either way it needs a PC port asap as the framerate drops are heavy on both platforms and 1/4 screen is missing. Game is still amazing though.

360 has better framerate but lots of tearing
PS3 has poorer framerate but is locked to vsync.

I have the PS3 version. Sometimes the framerate can get really shitty, especially that healing spell bubble... it's probably like 5-10 FPS :(

Game's fucking awesome otherwise, I have like 90 hours played and finished pretty much everything. Not sure what else there is to do after getting all the overpowered BBI loot.

I'd have to insist that Capcom's poor sales are in direct relation to their 'upgraded' releases. As consumers we've been fooled enough times now to know that in a few months there will be a newer version of the game with more stuff, and potentially even ANOTHER version of the game later with even more stuff.

Capcom has 'Ultimate'ly 'Gold'ed itself out of first run purchases.
