The Mega Man X shooter Maverick Hunter, previously in the works by ex-Metroid Prime developers at Armature Studio, was apparently cancelled because of differing viewpoints about the project within publisher Capcom.

"Given the lack of consensus in this thread alone, that should tell you what you needed to know. Suffice to say, there were very polarized opinions internally on this project as well." senior vice president Christian Svensson said in responding to a thread in the Capcom Unity forums from fans about why development of the reimagined game was halted (via Polygon).

The game's look was far from a traditional Mega Man game and featured armor designed by Adi Granov, the concept artist behind the Iron Man films. The game would have been the first of three following X's adventures into a final confrontation with Zero at the end of the trilogy.

It sounded cool but the art was terrible and not in the Mega Man vein. Metroid Prime still looked like a Metroid. This Mega Man game looked like it was coming from people that never played a Mega Man game.

the only reason i would have been optimistic about this game was the fact that metroid prime folks were involved, they did it once maybe they could do it again. its something that simply should not work and would have been guaranteed to be a huge disaster, but thats exactly what was said about metroid going FP and thus, i would have been cautiously optimistic.

Yeah, I mean we know how Metroid Prime turned out to be a horrible game that despoiled and diluted the Metroid franchise.

        Wait...

Super early pre-alpha footage shouldn't be taken as the final product in literally any possible way.

This is why they often don't even disclose this information on art assets and gameplay, and even if so, not until long after cancellation.

I'm a stout believer that Mega Man, like Castlevania, just doesn't work well in 3D. I'm always up for being proven wrong, though. I didn't think Metroid could work in 3D; then Prime came along and shoved my foot in my mouth. I would have tried a Mega Man FPS by Retro veterans if only to be proven wrong again.

I actually would like Mega Man to be more Metroidvania-ish, all stages available from a HUB but lots of hidden areas accessible by the different weapons. All bosses accessible from the start but with the usual advantages of certain weapons so they are easier to defeat in a certain order like the regular Mega Man games.

It is, but only because Super Metroid is slightly better than Metroid Prime.

The second one was kinda bland and the third tried too much to be Halo but the first was about as perfect a Metroid game as you can get in 3D. Did you enjoy Fusion and/or Zero Mission?

I couldn't get into the shitty console control scheme. I guess I shoulda tried the Wii ports when they were enhanced for the Wiimote pointer mode. That mighta made them playable.

But Lords of Shadow was awesome, and LoS2 looks baller.

That said, I'd love a new, console-based Castlevania, Metroid, or Mega Man which was fucking 2D with modern sprite work (like Dragon's Crown or P4A-quality)

Lords of shadow was a mixed bag. Some really high points, but also some frustratingly low ones. Particularly in the must-play post game DLC.

Just change the name "Dark Souls" to "Castlevania: something of the something" and cahnge out Gwynn for Dracula, and you have the greatest Castlevania ever. also, I actually liked Lords of Shadow. It wasn't perfect, but I had a good time with it
