The Sims 4 coming to PC and Mac in 2014, is single-player and offline [Update]

The Sims 4 will be coming to PC and Mac in 2014

Updated with new details from Maxis.

After nearly two hundred expansion packs* for The Sims 3, Maxis is finally moving on to the next generation of The Sims. The predictably named The Sims 4 will be coming to PC and Mac in 2014, the company has announced.

(*Not true. Exaggeration.)

Here's the original announcement:

The Sims franchise is fueled by the passion and creativity of its millions of fans around the world. Their continued devotion to the franchise ignites the fire of creativity of the team at The Sims Studio, driving them to continually improve and innovate on one of the world's most successful simulation game that has sold more than 150 million copies worldwide.

There's no mention of "connected" or "always-on" or "social" in the announcement. We're certain that Maxis wants to avoid a repeat of SimCity's launch fiasco--but who knows what kind of design they'll take next for the next trap-people-in-bathrooms-and-watch-them-die simulator.

Update: The Sims 4 is an offline game. In an updated post, Maxis points out that The Sims 4 "celebrates the heart and soul of the Sims themselves, giving players a deeper connection with the most expressive, surprising and charming Sims ever in this single-player offline experience."

It's been something like 66% off a few times recently. I know it was during the winter sale.

That doesn't include the $10,000 or so in SimsStore DLC.

Doubt they'll bundle it all together but distributors have just received word of two more Sims 3 compilations out this month. I'm not sure what's in them; one is called Starter Pack for $29.99 and the other Worlds Bundle for $19.99. I'd assume the Worlds Bundle is just the add-on neighborhoods rather than expansion packs. I also doubt EA would put more than two expansion packs in the Starter Pack so I'd guess the game, two expansions, and maybe a stuff pack or two.

Yep, but the game's being designed around only using one floor of a house and pooling resources with people who live above and below you.

Let's not forget Warren Spector's ideal game takes place in a single city block though.

i hope they do a simcity social thing where we're all playing in the same world. that would be cool. i don't care if it's always online as long as the game works

It's true, if your sim plays the sims on his computer for too long, he might pee himself. It's so hard to manage :(

Normally this type of announcement would get me excited, but after Sim City (which seems a little more broken to me after 2.0 patch) I am more than likely going to leave this one alone. I wouldn't be surprised if they incorporated some sort of always online, but did it quietly. And I wish they would incorporate weather into the core game, I always enjoyed the changing of the seasons in the Sims 2, but didn't pick up the expansion pack for it in Sims 3 because I didn't want to pay for it again.

It was gonna be called, "The Sims: Online 2" ... then just went with the 4 instead so they wouldn't get the backlash.

Sim City should be single player and The Sims should be social :( they have it backwards

Seriously wtf. Think of all the shit they SHOULD do with your sims when you're not playing. They could go off and live those lives and make friends with other people etc etc etc.

Its probably because the #1 demographic of the sims is 13 year old girls and theres no way anyones gonna let an army of 13 year old girls be forced to play online. It would get more rapey than an XBLA Uno chatroom.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was actually a serious issue with the online Sims game from like, the early 2000s.
