Final Fantasy XI may be over a decade old, but Square Enix is still pumping out new updates to keep the fans engaged. Next Monday, it will get another late-game patch to its "Seekers of Adoulin" expansion.

The update includes a new type of battle, in which up to eighteen players can enter a "fracture" to defeat five powerful monsters and their leader, with powerful equipment waiting as your reward. You can also take part in six-player fights against swarms of enemies by entering an ethereal realm from Ulbuka. That will net you some strong armor and armaments.

These updates only apply to the Seekers of Adoulin expansion, on both PC and Xbox 360, so you'll need that if you want to play with the new features. It's available as a standalone for $29.99, or as part of the "Ultimate Collection Seekers Edition" for $39.99.

Is the content a new game to replace the current, crumby one?

      Seriously, triple triad.

Is this a big money maker for Square? Why are they still pouring resources into this if they're hemorrhaging money from their Tomb Raider/Sleeping Dogs failure?

Seriously? Who is still playing FFXI or is looking for this new content?

XI has made more money for them than anything else they've ever created. I assume that if they're still making expansions, it's because they're continuing to make more on subscriptions than it costs to continue investing.

They charge for expansions, so it's not hard to see how it would be profitable. Classically, it would also take a year or longer for the story content to be fully released, and months for raid content. Meanwhile, they keep getting those sweet subscription fees.

Its one of their largest money makers... that is why they're trying to hard to get FFXIV to be worth playing

I don't know how you fuck up the sequel so badly when the first game was so profitable.

Because they launched it in the state of the original JP FFXI and thought that would fly. Remember that when FFXI came out here it also included the first expansion pack so it had months and months of improvements and content.

Then why do Japanese players tolerate absolute shit?

Pretty sure it wasn't popular in Japan.

Then again, this is the country where I'm told Ragnarok Online is still the most played MMORPG.
