Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi coming to 3DS

Playing video games without also experiencing a wide range of other arts leaves you a stunted and terrible person, so They say, but thankfully some novels are playable on your game devices and have pictures and everything. Publisher Aksys yesterday announced it's bringing visual novel Hakuoki: Memories of the Shinsengumi westward to Nintendo 3DS, to make you more whole by teaching a little something about love between a woman and a man.

Memories of the Shinsengumi is a 3DS version of the PSP game Hakuoki: Demon of the Fleeting Blossom, jazzed up with features using the 3DS hardware and more story bits.

It's playable in 3D, naturally, but surely the most exciting feature is the ability to take photos of yourself with characters in a 'purikura' photo booth-style thing. If only you could touch them.

Idea Factory's Hakuoki visual novel series has been jolly popular, spawning spin-offs, manga, and anime. It's a historical fantasy sort of thing, set towards the tumultuous end of Japan's Edo period but with demons kicking too. I suppose I should mention that you play a lady and get to romance boys, but that's inconsequential really isn't it?

Hmm... the developer had a significant booth at Winter Comiket in December. They showed me a PSP version of the game, which may very well have more than 100K words in text, along with a lot of voiced lines (the convention was too loud to hear the game at all). One thing that surprised me was the in-game ENCYCLOPEDIA. There's a ton of historical references throughout the story, and I think you get college credit for an Edo period Japanese history course if you complete the game. Well, with all that said, I'm going to stand by until we get a full review from Alice :)
