Splinter Cell Blacklist trailer shows off Wii U touchscreen

It's a shame that "augmented reality" in video games is typically used to mean overlaying games on our world, when using controllers to drag us into the game world is more interesting at the moment. Splinter Cell Blacklist will use the Wii U's GamePad as Sam's OpSat PDA to control his gadgets and gizmos, as a new trailer demonstrates.

Sam uses the OpSat to control his little drone, peek under doors, mark targets, and other high-tech spy things. And to manage his inventory, because old people are forgetful and need lists.

Yes, it's only a small conceit, but it's very tidy and far more interesting than the other augmented reality approach of pretending we're playing golf or fighting aliens in our bedrooms. We're already holding these things, let's have fun with it.

Splinter Cell Blacklist is due on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U on August 20.
